(Jim's writing was part of what got me into EVE as well, nearly a year ago.)

The "I can't recommend it" line cracked me up. Because it's true. EVE is a harsh mistress, but she'll show you wonders you won't find anywhere else. Also, mean whip.

Backing up what Jim said, with the starting charater boosts, you should be able to tackle (pin down the target) ships within a few days.

You may die, in fact you may die a lot.... but dying in Eve is cheap and easy when you're a young character and there's no finer moment than being part of a gang in your tech I frigate that kills a hugely expensive tech 2 or faction ship.

The character creation has been bumped up a bit so that starting characters have more skill points. I'd say it would only take a few weeks for you to be able to help out in a gang situation. This is part of what makes Eve pvp so different: there's no level difference. Anyone can tackle a target ship and stop it escaping, anyone can contribute to the overall damage output of a game. Having competent wingmen and commanders is far more important than your own skills. Solo pvp is something of a complex art in Eve, so even with many months character training most people find it impossible.

I'd argue that Eve is the least boring, if you get into PvP.

I agree with winterborn, infact I beta tested it then even come back to it a year later to see if much had changed, it still is the most boring mmo on the market.

I really like Eve in theory but in practice it's the only MMO that I've played the free trial for and uninstalled before it ran out. It just failed to grab me on any level. Of course, I don't know anyone who plays so maybe it would be different if I had friends to show me the ropes.

I am a trader in EVE and I make a very good living in the game. EVE is a game which rewards creativity and initiative, and if you have a good idea and can implement it well, you can make about the same amount (or more) on a daily basis that a worker at McDonald's would make.

I've just passed 3 years in Eve. I used to buy a new computer game every month. Since I started playing Eve, I've bought a grand total of 2 games.

No game has what Eve has. I'd recommend it over most RL activities and certainly over all PC games.

I started playing this game last January. I'm currently in Catch in the hottest war in 0.0. And I'm doing fine - even new characters can fight effectively in this game if you are in the right corporation.

The lag does get incredible, but there's no solution because bigger fleets = teh win. But even with the lag, 500 ship fleet battles are incredible.

ydraliskos: "Not that I’m bashing EVE. Hell, I have an active sub despite all that. It just needs to be said again and again and again till they are pressured enough to make it their 1 priority"

It is. It's why we created the Need For Speed initiative, it's why we're starting to use supercomputer technology (to reach 500+ in the same causality bubble) and it's why we're rewriting the graphics engine. It's all mentioned in this article, but I guess I could have spelled it out better :)
