Lovely article. I'm not sure I've ever read someone talking about feeling depressed after finishing making a game. Good reminder games are made by people.

[...] The Settlers 2: Gold Edition & Settlers: Heritage of kings – £6.05/6.72/$9.99 I played the very first settlers game on the Amiga 1200. Alright, I played the demo, over and over again, never the full game. It was pretty neat. There was a big castle in the middle of your territory, and you got to place buildings, make paths between everything. Lots of lovely resource management too, and It had a pace that was plenty relaxed for my 6 year old brain. I’ve not played any of the other entries in the series, but I gather they became a bit more combat heavy as time went by. On offer here is the second game in the series, which looks a lot like how I remember the first, and “Heritage of Kings”, the fifth one, which has polygons! You can get both for 50% off, or just one of them at a 30% discount. Kieron did an interview with Thomas Hauser, who worked on the second game, which you can read here. [...]

Oh, god. I've just realised my complete and utter spelling fail there. What I meant to say was "There's an open source Settlers remake out there that's pretty good - http://wl.wideland.org "

Ah, never seen this article before. It's from before I started browsing RPS I fancy. Interesting read though, and chalk me up as another one who played this a lot, starting on one Christmas day when I got the PC Gamer UK mag where the cover disk had the Settlers II demo on it. Great memories, although the music drove my family absolutely up the wall.

Did you know?

The original Settlers was largely developed by a single person, Volker Wertich, who was also responsible for the development of Settlers 3. Volker later moved on to create his own development studio "Phenomic", which was responsible for the development of the Spellforce RPS series before beeing bought by EA last summer.

Bluebyte on the other hand got bought by Ubisoft, so all the new Settlers games are published by Ubisoft.

I'm much the same as you, Kalle. I bought Settlers 3 and disliked it intensely. Except I don't think I could stomach the anniversary edition nowadays. I don't even know if I could stomach the 'original' Settlers 2 nowadays.

I've seen the 10th anniversery in stores but I've always passed it over thinking it couldn't be anything like my memories of Settlers 2. This article convinced me I should give it a try.

I loved Settlers 2 so much, and I hated what they did to the series afterwards. Hopefully this will be all that I remember it to be.

I spent almost as much time on Settlers 2 as I did on Civ 2, and that's a lot. I meant to buy the 10th anniversary version, but never got around to it. Maybe it's for the best; even the demo hoovered up a startling amount of my time.
