“The name’s Malcolm.”
“Reaper.”
Eh?
Anyway, it seems that Unreal Tournament III requires some kind of story mode to explain why you’re locked into a series of battles, and also (according to my sources) why you keep respawning. Here we go:
Eugh, these flu drugs are making me hallucinate.

Buh? Isn’t Unreal Tournament supposed to be a, er, tournament?
27/10/2007 at 17:26 Theory says:
That was surprisingly good for what’s still an online gibfest at its heart. I hope the maps aren’t just repurposed online arenas.
27/10/2007 at 17:33 SteveTheBlack says:
What worries me is that in all likelihood the story mode will just be normal botmatches with cutscenes pasted in, which is just pointless.
I really hope I’m wrong though, and it has a proper story. :)

Wasn’t there talk of a DoW:DC-style campaign map thingy?
27/10/2007 at 17:44 FaceOmeter says:
“from the makers of gears of war”?
this annoys me a bit. shouldn’t it be, you know, “from the makers of all the other unreal games over the last ~10 years of their fantastic history”?!
27/10/2007 at 17:49 drunkymonkey says:
Not now they’re attempting to reach out to the console massive, Face. Gears of War is Epic’s most prolific title as far as they’re concerned.
@Theory: My thoughts exactly. Nice to see Malcolm is still in it though, for what that is worth.
27/10/2007 at 18:19 Kieron Gillen says:
To be fair: “Unreal Tournament 3 from the makers of Unreal” is kind of pointless. I mean, it’s Unreal Tournament 3. People know that it’s an Unreal Name from the game.
However, people who DON’T know anything about games wouldn’t automatically connect Gears of War to Unreal Tournament 3.

Aww :(

Isn’t this basically what “single player” one-on-one fighter games do? A series of fights?
THAT is why I never play them. Give me Streets Of Rage, thanks.
I’m slowly warming to UT3 – one thing it does to right is movement speed. You can move about pretty rapidly now, but I do miss the dodge jump.
Can’t stand the new “dark” look to the characters though. This game has absolutely no personality any more, despite how it plays.

Kieron will be with me on this: Replace the trailer music.
Hey! Hey! Macho macho man!
27/10/2007 at 21:01 Willem says:
That looks really, really bad. REALLY BAD.
27/10/2007 at 21:27 KBKarma says:
You and me both. The weapons all look the same to me until I pick them up (might have been the map, though). The bad guys look so similar as well. And also like your allies.
I got upset when they made Enforcers fire some kind of weedy burst-fire instead of their grenades. But the Piston is back, so THAT’S alright.

Also: haHA! I got the quotes right!

27/10/2007 at 21:45 Al says:
2003 kind of had a sorty of proto-plot tacked on to the single player ladders- but at least it kpet it within the bounds of the “Tournament” remit.
This looks stupid.
27/10/2007 at 22:42 Robin says:
Hurk. From the makers of Unreal II, more like.
I’m sure Epic are lovely chaps and UT3 will be ripping fun, but Christ, can’t they respect our intelligence just a little bit? I hope against hope that Orange Box, Bioshock and the like with outsell UT3 and GoW on the PC, to give them a kick up the arse, the daft jock meatheads.
Also, is that Greg “Taurus from I76″ Eagles voicing Malcolm? How far we’ve come in ten years.
28/10/2007 at 07:31 Thiefsie says:
Isn’t that Marcus Fenix with a haircut and some new threads?
28/10/2007 at 10:50 Winterborn says:
Hahahahahahaha.
That is one of the greatest works of comedy ever. If the whole game is full of over the top self parody like that it will be a blast.
Though, I’m scared that somewhere out there teenagers are going to take it seriously and write fan fiction about it.
28/10/2007 at 13:58 Solario says:
Agreed. It looks hilarious. Then again, it’s Unreal. It’s not like there’s a story behind it anyway.
Also: Bunch of guys with big weapons with high explosive capabilities grouping next to each other and the enemy? Most ineffective warfare ever.

Depends if FF is on or not, no?
28/10/2007 at 14:23 Mori says:
I’m wondering if the single player campaign is like a prequel to the first UT game, and the MP is the part that’s in the future of the tournament. The first UT talked about a necris war and mining colonies and such that led to the tournament.
28/10/2007 at 14:47 Mr Blackett says:
I don’t mean to be a snob but urrgh. What must the meetings at Epic be like?
“So, like, we get this dude, big dude, and we’ll give him a super-huge gun. Then we’ll put a chainsaw on it. It’ll be super-awesome! He’ll, like, totally chainsaw through monsters and stuff. And he’ll be a bit like a samurai warrior so your enemies know that you could totally flip out and burn down the town at any time. And the music will be, like, totally heavy metal techno shit that will rock and be super-awesome.”
“Okay 14 year-old boy, we will realise your vision. What do you want for a plot?”
“Fuck, who cares? As long as there are, like, cities getting burned to the ground and innocents getting slaughtered, I don’t give a fuck about plot.”
28/10/2007 at 15:51 Chemix says:
Considering the previous UT titles had botmatch and “singleplayer” (botmatch plus trophies and pre-defined level ladders) to choose from I welcome a tacked on story, it’ll at least make it more enjoyable for off-line players like myself. There are simply too few servers that I can play on without massive lag (despite a cable modem connection) for me to become an active multi-player, player.
I don’t expect the greatest single player experience ever, but I expect to have some fun and then play lots of mods. I might hold off on buying this one for a little while though, as Assassin’s Creed and Time Shift are going to be taking up my late November buildup of spare change.

Now that you mention it, that’s actually very likely. I remember Necris Wars and Mining Colonies somewhere.
However, this video is rather ambiguous. I can’t tell whether it’s SET in those far-off days in the Colonies, or if it’s set later, and the video just showed where the thing began.
However, as Al said,
From what I can see, the “tournament” bit has been ignored for the SP and tacked onto MP. Which makes no sense. Thus, MP and SP are entirely different beings.
I don’t like how it feels like an XBox 360 game. I hope that’s fixed up. It’s near-impossible to maneovure in the menus, and I miss my Enforcer grenades.
It also seems like they’ve taken a lot from their work on Gears. Everything seems more futuristic and dark. Which, while bad IN the dark, is good otherwise.
29/10/2007 at 02:06 Masked Dave says:
As far as I remember it, the original ‘Unreal Tournament’ (in the games mythos) was designed to keep the employees on remote mining colonies entertained. Thus why nobody actually dies or something.
The war element comes from the single player ‘Unreal’ games. Although I never really played 2003 or 2004 so I don’t know how they fit in.
Whatever, the designer’s clearly have a storytelling itch to scratch with this universe but they decided to embellish it in the single player of this game rather than making an Unreal 3. Something I’m sure we can all be grateful for.

You people like those little grenade launchers? bah.
give me the original enforcers. gangstah!
29/10/2007 at 16:32 KBKarma says:
Those grenades were useful things. Almost as good as a flak grenade.
Also, shield gun/piston is the best. Dodge fast enough, and you can plaster them all over the walls.

I have to say whenever I see anything epic make I can’t help but think that their concept artists are big fans of the art of “Tom of Finland”. You can google search that, but you might find it’s not worksafe, or to your tastes, but there is no denying there is some similarity there ;)
