Source SDK FTW

By John Walker on November 8th, 2007 at 12:43 am.

The promised SDK update from Valve is finally here.

Minimalism

Now those of you clever enough to understand difficult things can get to creating your own Portal levels, including maps, models and textures. Which means there’s no excuse. It also includes all you need for mucking about with Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 content.

If you’re new to the Source SDK and want to get your hands on it, you’ll need to already own a Source-based Valve game, and the open Steam, go to the Tools tab, and install Source SDK. Then head to the Valve Developer Community Wiki where there are detailed notes to get you started.

    Hurray.

Although this may seriously limit my Games Design Workshop in the morning while I wait for all the machines to update. Joy.

If you’re not already a member of the hlcoders mailing list, now is a very good time to join!

One fascinating new Hammer feature, if a bit broken, is a real-time lighting preview. Apparently it’s not working for many people (I haven’t even tried it yet), but it looks utterly intriguing…

  3. KindredPhantom says:

I can’t wait to see how the existing and future mods incorporate the new features in the sdk.

  4. Watcher95 says:

Already loving some of the TF2 custom maps out over the last few weeks, now the quality and quantity is going to make a huge jump.
    (yay)

  5. MedO says:

I agree, but I fear the jump for quality and quantity will go into opposite directions…

  6. Kim says:

Yes… I’m goning to take a loooong while getting aquianted to source, because otherwise – i’ll just add to the quantity…

And for my next trick, a new multiplayer gamemode for Portal: ‘Capture the Weighted Companion Cube’. Some day, this dream will be reality.

That or procrastination will set in. :(

  8. Ging says:

Now, if only they hadn’t broken quite so many of the tools in the process of releasing this update. You can’t even place a prop_static properly as the model browser kills hammer.

That’s ignoring the issues we had at the uni today getting the new tools to play nicely with the steam cafe licenses (that doesn’t currently include the orange box, so we had to change the engine it uses).

Hopefully everything will get sorted out in double quick time.

Dudes, where are the new tools? I want the new camera program, and the real time material editor, and.. and..

Neo_kitty will not be pleased. :((((((((
