There are a lot of things that can kill you if you do them for nineteen hours straight.

People suffering from future shock tend to target games though.

A really great article. Gave me some good insights into the way I play games and the ways I can make that healthier, as well as insights into the nature of "addiction" itself. Thank you!

"I interviewed Sid Meier once, and while chatting I asked him if he ever considers the numbers of man hours his games must have taken up. He replied by telling me that he frequently gets letters from people saying how Civ took over their lives. One guy wrote to say that his wife had left him because of it, and he was writing to thank him, because he much prefered Civ to his wife."

There's the story of the author Iain Banks who had to delete CIV from his PC and then break the install disks to avoid him missing a deadline for one of his books, as he was spending an inordinate amount of time playing.

That's a sad tale, Richard. It's a shame that we still see prejudice against gaming in people's judgments about it, even today.

I feel like I should pimp my book in this situation, as it contains lots of positive spin for gamers.

I turn 70 next week. I am currently accused by my family of being addicted to online games, Guild Wars specifically! I just Googled a half dozen other activities and such as bowling, golf, sports watching, etc. All of those have people claiming they are addicting. The one common thing most of the reports have is that the other party does not enjoy or care to try the activity. We have friends, husband and wife who play golf every possible day, while they do joke about being "addicted" they certainly have no intention of stopping just because someone else says they should.
My current question to my family is how old would I have to be before I am allowed to engage an an otherwise legal nor immoral activity as much as I like.
I otherwise clean our house every week, cook meals 5-6 days a week for my wife, do all the grocery shopping, do laundry and go to the gym for one or two hours a day. I also ride my Spyder motorcycle several hours a day weather permitting and then I watch TV with my wife every evening. I also take her dancing whenever she wants.
I have also ceased playing online with other real people since my wife and 27 year old daughter object to my online socializing!
I have tried to get then interested in the game and tried to explain that they could both play with me themselves if they wanted but both refuse to even try the game.
To say the least I am getting quite frustrated by the situation!
