Vast Borderlands Screens

By Jim Rossignol on November 26th, 2007 at 12:05 pm.

Good Afternoon, Internet. I hope you all had a lovely weekend, because we certainly did; awash in videogames as we are. Still, there’s no resting on laurels round these parts and so we’ve been making some inquiries about that rather interesting Mad Max-in-Space project from Gearbox: Borderlands. We’re hoping to deliver a splendid interview in the near future, but to quench our info-thirst 2k Games were kind enough to send over a batch of screenshots. They’re not particularly new, but blimey, we’re excited about this game.

The screens show some suggestive detail, such as the alien beasts in combat, some vehicle stuff such as bandit garages, a mysterious teleporter, and some FPS shootery. Click through for more…

And click on these letterboxes for the uncropped (and gigantic) full images:

Hot fashion tip for 2008: Orange-lensed goggles are IN.

    KG

  2. Ben Abraham says:

Do you think they meant for the creatures being run over in the 3rd last shot to look like Zerglings?

  3. Piratepete says:

Mad Max and Dragons. Nice :)

  4. Thelps says:

I must say the lighting in those screenshots has a very pleasing ‘faux’ quality to it. All overexposed and greyed-out. Me likes.

  5. Ging says:

I wants it – but at the same time, I’m scared that it’s just not going to be very good, in a “we’ve started the hype machine way too early and have made lots of promises already” sort of way.

  6. Dracko says:

Crates and explosive barrels? Will such wonders ever cease!

  7. Jim Rossignol says:

Ging: yes, that’s my concern too. That, or it’s going to be good, but be over-developed, and have some awful central game mechanic and a bajillion cutscenes that nobody wants to watch.

  8. Theory says:

    Screen five: that’s no mountain!

  9. AbyssUK says:

Another FPS.. but this time with dragons.. what do game ‘designers’ actually do these days.. they are getting worse than shaver designers…”Quick add another blade”.

Where are the fresh new ideas ??

  10. The Fanciest Of Pants says:

Really looking forward to this, I must say. If it comes out at all like it seems anyway… Co-op open ended mad-maxery with vehicles AND fpsness?

For the love of Odin don’t screw this one up.

  11. EMPty=IRL= says:

I love the look of it but I also really like that you included really big screenshots. So few sites do, most are 1024×1280 and I like big ass screenshots!
    Thanks.

“Where are the fresh new ideas ??”

From the Wiki page for the game:

The game will also have a unique feature similar to Diablo’s random level generation system. This new system will generate a nearly endless (750,000+) number of item variations. According to the preview of the game in Game Informer magazine,

“We saw a ridiculous amount of guns, but perhaps the strangest was a revolver that fired shotgun shells. Gearbox is constantly surprised with what the system comes up with. They’ve seen rifles shoot everything from homing darts to rockets. ‘One of the guns tracks onto something and locks, and after three seconds, (the target) suddenly explodes,’ director Matthew Armstrong says.”

Sounds both deliciously insane and utterly genius. Straight into waiting list.

  13. noethis says:

Is it just me, or do the graphics look a little bit dated in some of those shots? Sure, they show excessive use of motion blur, but beyond that, some of the textures look low-res, I don’t see spec or normal mapping in a lot of the shots on the textures, some of the geometry looks like maybe Half-Life 1.5-ish era stuff, etc. Of course, graphics != gameplay, but the screenshots are all I have to go off of for the moment.

  14. Ging says:

Where are you not seeing normal mapping or specular in those images? You’ve gotta remember that it’s all still “wip”, so it won’t look perfect quite yet.

Ah bugger. There goes the genius business plan I’ve been nursing for the last five years… I was going to try to sell it to Valve as well…

  16. Solario says:

I wish there was a bit more steampunk Princess of Mars feel, but I guess Mad Max, the Doom edition is alright.

  17. schizoslayer says:

Sixth screen from the top; What exactly is he intending to do with that gun?

  18. Alexander says:

Trivia: Very interesting is the large large digger on the screenshots of Borderlands’ website. It is modeled after a REAL digger that was specifically built for a project in Germany.

This had better be more than just a random mapping between “gun type” and “bullet type”.

  20. grey_painter says:

Do all enemies die as dramatically as the guy in the third screen shot? Jazz hands!

  21. The Zombie says:

    That is dead sexy.
    Looks extremely delicious so far.

  22. Zeh says:

Motion blur (even when not featured on the real game) is the new lens flare.

  23. lol says:

wen does the game come out?????
