I'm so too late for the partyregarding this post. But I have to state this. Since I temporarily gave up on writing about games and stuff professionally I was in the lucky position of having enough time to really dig way deep into ETQW. And it's pure mastery is just astonishing. This is such a brilliant effort in gamplay balance and tactical teamplay. And the worst part is, it's impossible to go back.
Eventually I stopped playing because other stuff (Orange Box, Mass Effect, The Witcher) interested me as well. But I tried TF2 right after my hardcore ETQW effort and I feel bad for saying this but it just felt very onedimensional and bland. So beware of the mighty dot clan. When our wymin and bosses have finally abonded us, we shall rise again!

Jocho: Alas, games get taken off shelves and reduced in price so quickly, purely non-release timed reviews would end up with very poor developers.

(To be honest, the grown up way of doing it would be like music and film - they have the game done months in advance, and then start the PR on it when they have a finished item. The rush from completion to shops is one of the many ways games are an immature industry)

I didn't read that Chuck Klosterman-article back when it was published, but did now thanks to the link.

I think the quick answer to his question "why there's no real game-criticism?" is that the reviews has to be in pretty much the same day a game releases, even though it takes weeks, months, to get a good grip of some of them. And more time to evaluate what you've played, how you felt in some parts and what it, as he says, "meant". Game reviews should come a few months after release, so those things don't get rushed out. I even think that would cause the games to sell more (some buy at release due to anticipation, some get reminded by reviews and buy then), so the devs should encourage it.

Oh, sorry, got off-topic. ET:QW is probably great. ;P

Aye, I have to agree with Feet. I absolutely LOVED the original ET, for two reasons - one, it was incredibly close quarters combat (Siwa Oasis, anyone?), but also because both teams were incredibly balanced - in fact, (with ETPro) both teams were exactly the same, apart from looks. How much more balanced is that? However, from what I hear of ET:QW, it's not quite the same. And I've always though vehicles imbalance an encounter

Currently however, my class based FPS fix is lovingly tended to by TF2.

I've been having a great time playing ETQW casually - an hour or so every few days has worked out pretty well. I definitely wish I could fit it in more often but I'm tremendously satisfied with it when I get to play.

I love ET:QW. At least a game complex, engaging and demanding.

As an avid W:ET fan I was really disappointed by this. I know it's not meant to be the same game but, personally, what I loved about ET was the close combat. While the classes were different in terms of load outs and tools, it was quite possible for any other class to overcome another in a straight firefight (cept for lv4 Medics praps). In ETQW that balance is lost due to the vehicles. If you're not in one then you are going to lose. Balance lost it's not about skill anymore. This is why I love TF2, the team and class balance is excellent, better than W:ET. Someone needs to mod some objective based gameplay into TF2!

Hmm, yes, pretty much agree with you on the too complex front. I enjoy it, but just don't have the time, nor the friends, to do it justice.

Oh, and the dominance of snipers, and the lack of any kind of kill cam just leaves me irritated. But yes, it really is beautiful.
