God Gave Rock and Roll and Still Alive To You

Maybe Black Mesa. Haha, fat chance, they're a fictional science insitution that accidentally caused an alien invasion.

Frankly very tired of all the shouty nonsense rock on Guitar Hero III (really, it should have just consisted of Paint It Black 32 times over), I began to crave other musical delights for my ruined hands. I don’t know why I didn’t think of looking for this before. Frets on Fire isn’t bound by such tiresome conventions as rock songs and guitars. If it’s a song, you can play it on your little plastic guitar (or keyboard or gamepad or Strategic Commander) – regardless of whether there’s actually much guitar in it. And hence I found myself merrily playing these two fine pieces of Valve-related music…

That’s more like it. Though clearly practice is required. In my defence, I will say that FRAPS churning away in the background and chewing up the framerate complicates matters somewhat, but then that’s a bit like claiming the only reason your genitals look so tiny is because it’s very cold in here.

Want to try it yourself? Filefront are hosting a user-made pack containing both of ‘em here. So it’s their fault if it’s completely illegal, not ours. But if this link is quietly edited out soon, it’s probably because I’ve been killed.

If you don’t already have Frets On Fire, then a) shame on you and b) it’s here.

The Still Alive one didn’t seem to sync up to anything for most of it. Other than that, very cool.

  2. Alec Meer says:

There’s actually a different version of Still Alive to the one in the video in the linked download. But I found it too monstrously hard to possibly want to record myself playing it.

  3. Faust says:

I may be missing something, but is the download purely songs, and if so, where does one get the actual game from? I can’t seem to find an .exe anywhere….

  4. Faust says:

Check that, I’m an unobservative idiot.

  5. Stew says:

One day I’ll learn how to use the wii guitar with the OS X version of FoF. Moo hoo ha ha ha.

  6. Al says:

for frets on fire, I’d really have to recommend against typing something like “frets on fire guitar hero” into torrentspy or isohunt. It would be a very, very bad thing to do.

  7. Lu-Tze says:

Where did you get the skin for FoF?

  8. yns88 says:

Where’s that monstrously hard version of Still Alive? Because those look too easy for me.

  9. Scott says:

Lu-Tze, that’s the GH mod for the latest version of FoF. It’s somewhere on fretsonfire.net

  10. po says:

Oooh. I’ve got a strategic commander. I use it for text editing, when I can’t be bothered with regular expressions :D

  11. Saskwach says:

I don’t have Frets on Fire because it chews up my internet and spits it out with much contempt. Plus I’m too lazy to find the problem.
