I think whoever said that the problem is that this trailer isn't demonstrating what we think a zombie game should look like is pretty close to the money (Sorry I didn't weed back through the comments to find your name, you know who you are). After some consideration of this, 'd like to offer some contention, however: I don't think it looks how we want a survival game to look, and that's the real problem.

The fast pace, zombie mobs, plentiful ammo and music that sounds more like we should be mowing down Nazis all indicate a hell-of fun, bombastic, exploding zombie fest. Which is all well and good, don't get me wrong, but still not really the reason I play games with monsters in them.

If I want to feel all powerful, manly and not so much like the Beta male I am, nearly every first person shooter ever is designed to slake exactly that impulse. The fun of survival games (for me, anyway) come from feeling vulnerable. From getting by on my cleverness over my reflexes.

When I first heard of Left 4 Dead and its focus on small team play, my immediate assumption was that it would have a slower, soberer pace than, say, Call of Duty 4 for exactly this reason.

So it doesn't look like a bad game at all. In fact, I'm sure it'll be an outrageously fun game with loads of clever ideas. It just doesn't look like the game I've been waiting years for (which is, admittedly, just Condemned with multiplayer).

I don't think the speed of zombies will affect the game that much. What will however is: easy, normal, hard and...intense.
This is what makes the whole difference. The whole game circles around the 'different experience' every time you play it. Nothing will ever be the same. This time the AI director attacks here, next time you get ambushed there.
I love valve games but I don't know if I can drop TF 2 for anything. ;p

James T, thank you. Now I must find Yakety Sax, and play it on a loop when I eventually buy this game.

I had a dream about Left4Dead last night. Does anyone else have video-game dreams a lot? I do. (After I played Portal I had a lot of really fun dreams involving a portal-gun.) In this one I was running around a terrifying post-apocalyptic cityscape, gunning down (fast) zombies. Then I dreamt that I woke up, and told my girlfriend "I just dreamt that I stayed up playing Left4Dead until 3 in the morning! I'm glad it was a dream because I have to be at work at 8!" and she said "That wasn't a dream!!!" DUN-DUN-DUN! Then I woke up (for real).

Anyway, this game is going to rule.

Something must have gone wrong with the video. It actually looks like this.

Also: James T, internet hero of the hour!
