Jonathan, Democracy 2 is really patched up since the demo, I had problems with demo too, but the game (now version 1.16 I guess) is much improved regarding compatibility now.

"I started doing a game about traffic congestion once... I bet there's some people reading this who would at least try the demo"

I would. Give me my traffic congestion demo!

Cheers for the interview.

I'm immediately reminded that I was planning to pick up Democracy 2 after being impressed by the demo. *unfolds wallet*

Nice to see an auteur designer making it. The industry needs more of them, and I don't just mean in the indie scene (although this is probably where they have more chance of surviving).

I agree with Cliffski's philosophy on 'singular visions', although I do think that the counsel of other designers is an important part of the creative process once a game has gone into production. Ideally one orchestrator yeas or nays every design decision, though, in the interests of cohesion and consistency.

I think things like toning down the DRM, demos, etc should be done to improve the experience for one's customers and if they happen to result in a few sales to people who typically pirate stuff, that's just gravy.

But I don't think we really need to get into that subject *again*. Cliffski...I'm happy your games are doing well enough for you to make a living at it - always good to hear. I can't say as they're really my thing, but the more options on the gaming scene, the better.

Speaking as someone who's been there (too many times), that sounds like a pretty accurate band sim to me.

Personally I thought Kudos was boring but Democracy and Rock Legend were great, even if it WAS impossible to actually keep a decent band going before they all got irate and required a firing.

A fantastic indie developer, sadly the demo for Democracy 2 doesn't seem to work, though I do have the rest of his games.

I'd trade a dozen Lion Head Molyneux' for this guy. I mean I'd also trade a dozen Lion Head Molyneux' to get Bullfrog Molyneux back.

In answer to the question you asked Chris, I think he ran when Peter started talking about magic dogs that act as a minimap and health bar. And unconditional love as a key feature.

Great interview. It's nice to know that Cliff's doing well with his games.

He's 2 for 2 in my book; I enjoyed both Kudos and Rock Legend immensely. Looking forward to supporting him again when Kudos 2 is released.
