It’s almost like Valve are trend-setters or something. Electronic Arts have announced that they’re pairing up with TV company Film Roman (The Simpsons Movie, X-Men: Evolution) to bring us an “animated prequel” before sci-fi horror shooter Dead Space is released. Sounds a bit like “we’re making a big old CG trailer” to me, but EA and Film Roman have said that it will be a “TV special”, suggesting greater things. Film Roman President and COO Scott Greenberg was quoted as saying “We’re really looking for this to be an event. We feel we’ll attract the hardcore gamer, but we’ll also get sci-fi and animation fans as well.” Film Roman, who did a lot of the production work for The Simpsons Film, as well as producing some other random stuff, could be up to make a job of it. It also has a comic book tie-in, illustrated by the rather spiffy Ben Templesmith (of 30 Days of Night fame). It seems EA are really putting some hefty ‘cross-media’ weight behind it in a bid to manufacture some Halo 3-style launch hype, here’s hoping the game itself is good enough to justify it.
And also have drafts written by Warren Ellis and Rick Remender.
Which is pretty much the only reason I’m interested in it.
Is it just me, or does this much hoopla make you start to worry that the game itself may not be so great?
It’ll probably be crap. Video game to passive media transitions always end in disaster
Go go gadget pessimism!
That game looks like a cheap ripoff of Bioshock. I don’t think a lot of hype is going to make that change.
Ignoring the hype. Too hopeful to want to risk becoming jaded.
A comic translation by Templesmith and Ellis? That’s awesome, but I suppose I’ll be disappointed if it isn’t just Fell in space. :P
Also, Film Roman’s CV doesn’t augur well for their tie-in’s quality. Still, I’m capable of being cautiously optimistic about the game itself.
Templesmith?! *squeal!*
The actual comic is written by the (brilliant) Antony Johnson, who talks about it here.
Preview pages here.
(Admission: Antony’s a friend. But I’d have said this anyway)

Well, what I read of Wasteland was pretty damn awesome.
Cyren: How is it a cheap ripoff of Bioshock? Or System Shock, for that matter, before anyone goes there?
For one, they’re actually pushing gameplay mechanics instead of stat gimmicks.
Picked the comic up today, and found it a good read. Templesmith’s art is, as always, a joy to behold, and they’ve laid some promising foundations for the next 5 issues and the game itself. Here’s hoping they don’t cock it up.
