i was so ready to buy this game and a lifetime membership after playing in the beta for a few days, then i finally got outside the starting castle/town and i realized "its another group/grind fest". after all the claims of being solo friendly, you were still stuck with having to group to do anything or otherwise tag along after a group and hope you don't get spawned on in the middle of a camp.

anyway, i cancelled my preorder and never touched it again.

The core game's pretty solid but I think the license holds them back. When I play fantasy I want something vivid and lively with really impressively cool spells and such, and Tolkien's Middle-Earth is kind of drab and low magic. I like LOTR and all, but it's not something I want to MMO in.

if it hadn't taken three days to download the 3625, yes, 3625 files that it required, I would be playing the demo now. As it stands though, almost half of my 'seven day trial' has been spent simply trying to get the game.

I played the beta, thought it had nice features but on the whole wasn't great. It does a lot of things better than WoW, but I think they picked the wrong things to be better at.

I really wanted to fucking love this game, i wanted to IMMERSE myself in it. The only reason I didn't was that all my mates were already addicted to WoW. I think this is much better than Warcraft, in that i'm a massive Tolkein nerd. OH GOD i'm really tempted to reload it all right now - it does the sense of place perfectly, it's just i've got noone to play with :(. IF any RPS-ites are starting new dwarves let me know!

Heh. I worked on this game, and I just want to say that on the balance issues between casual and hardcore players, we spent a lot of time working on a metrics system that (1) identified beta players in bins as to how much time they spent playing and (2) looked at the differences between play styles. Correlating this with forum data, we came up with what we thought was a good balance of content between the two (or actually, three) groups of players.

Well yes, Alec. I am walking around the Bree area, since I don't like the Barrenslike feel (in terms of huge enviroments) of The Shire. Why I am playing this? Because it was cheap as hell. :) Bought the game for €10 (that's like 6 quid for you Brits) at some Dutch shop. It was the fancy special edition with the free 45 day bonus playtime. Pretty nice, especially when you know you don't have to buy extra time via creditcard or stuff like that. No strings attached.

Plus I always wanted to try out the trial but a 8 gig download is wayyy too much, heh heh. So this was an easy and cheap way to try out the full version. Am I addicted? No way. Is it better than World of Warcraft? Not quite. Does it has it's differences? Yes, especially the housing, the music system and the quests (come on, the book quests are pretty nice and in fact do feel Tolkienish!). But will I keep playing on after these 45 days? I don't think so. Especially with a certain car stealing game later this month...

Still, I can recommend LOTR:O and wish more people would try and play it. It certainly deserves it.

Agreed.

Personally I wasn't that impressed with the game. The do have some really cool things, such as titles and deeds, but the rest feels like an early beta of WoW dressed up in Peter Jackson's colors.

in the beginning we almost tried to pretend that there wasn’t any IP.

I'm not sure they ever moved past that point :P. I'm sure it worked for other people, but other than obvious similarities to the movies I didn't see much Middle Earth in that game.
