I also think that Pathologic has the cruelest survival mechanics ever in a video game. Every day brings its own problems and tasks, and plot threads vanish as the next day begins.

Cool article.

Pathologic, Rez (HD), Killer 7 (Gamecube), Mercenary II on an old Amiga 500, Pathways into Darkness, System Shock II* & Beast Busters II.. oh man, if only I could get around to getting around to playing such mind-searingly awesome games as these (and had the money, heh).. 'epic' wouldn't begin to cover it.

I found the bizarre existential atmosphere of Pathologic to be incredibly literary; full of mysterious potential. It's like Shadow Of The Colossus - it makes one wonder "Do games this good even actually exist?" (And, if so - in what strange way do they exist?)

..Right now (5am) I'm so fractured and unintelligible that writing this article comment is adding to the nightmarish surreality of the game world I think I now inhabit on a permanent basis.

OMDog I just gotta go to bed
Henry Swanson

*Important User Note: actually getting "System Shock II" to actually run on a modern pc.. is itself the true & perhaps only point of the game. That's right - it's really an emergent online social ARG, in which you talk to other afflicted 'shockers' about getting it to run.. and failing. Such games can take years to resolve themselves.

As for Pathologic - it's really about the pain of trying not to submit to the overpowering temptation of finding cheat codes for it online ;-)

I am sad to report that I tried the game, tried my damndest to like it, but simply couldn't stomach its flaws. I can see that there is something important going on under the surface. There is a genius in the theater elements brought to the game medium, but it seems like the game was made hastily and without a lot of effort. I'm ok with the terrible graphics, but you rarely see more than 3 types of people on the streets (gritty guy, little girl and normal guy), and every shopkeep is the exact same model. That combined with the atrocious combat, complex gameplay elements with no explanation given and the horrid translation made the game simply unplayable for me. I would almost prefer to read the story that is told in the game in book form, rather than play it in such a confusing, mixed up environment.

I hope some will appreciate it, I cannot.

so Iv tried to play this "game" ... few hrs in and just walking around and talking with everyone I can without much progress at all ;/ it gets rather boring, the ammount of charachters and facts is pretty big to keep it all remembered from one session to another. the story seems superfluous. the world is pretty big but very empty with nothing to do there, the 'action' part is so poorly made (didnt hope for it anyway, even russian shooters have mostly poor combat)

the atmosphere is nice tho, and the story is intriguing, but there is no gameplay so far, except exploration. Ill try to play it a bit more, and maybe find the russian version.

And one last thing - knowing russian gamedev Im pretty surprised this got made (and finished) at all! I can imagine the budget was ridiculously small for such an ambitious project, the team was rather small and inexperienced

The article reminds me of Omikron: The Nomad Soul -- which was also way ahead of its time, but marred by terrible gameplay.

Best game I ever played. So deep and meaningful that it actually leaves its trace in you - it's unforgettable. Even if you hate it for low fps and poor graphics, you can't get it out from your head. You will come back to it - again and again.
"Neither the Death nor the Sun can be looked at in front..... Who said that?"
