Interesting... I liked the star-thing in Animal Crossing, but I always kind of came out with these weird looking shapes. Then again, I suppose that was more realistic. I hope Mr. Humble's kidding about the Sims 3 thing though. That goes against the nature of free form games. It might make sense if it only simulated one life, but an every generation of a expandable area? How does that end, atom bomb? This is why I probably won't get Spore. Most games lose their playability after a while, but less goal-oriented games shouldn't force you to stop.

Nice interview! I first encountered Mr. Humble's name, though, when he was the producer of the brilliant vehicular mayhem simulator, Quarantine... which incidentally contained the hidden message 'Rod...Humble...Is...Drunk...Again.' ;)

(Confusingly this machine thinks I’m Kieron).

Confusingly, I thought you were Kieron until I read that line, because I generally look at the Gravatar first - are you perhaps using the same (probably RPS-based) e-mail address as Kieron?

Don't forget that in Pathologic, the Masks address you the player, not you the character. The rest of the NPCs talk to the character, but the Masks know more - and it confuses your character no end. And the Masks mock you every midnight by putting on a play based on what you did that day. (Confusingly this machine thinks I'm Kieron).

Kieron and Nicko: You guys remind me of the encounter in Baldur's Gate 2, where a party of novice adventurers decide to attack you. You trounce them easily, but then a "reloading" message pops up and the encounter replays with the novice party deciding not to fight you. At least it lets you know how all those other NPC's feel when you reload your game.

When eating with developers it is customary to document the food in exhaustive detail. John Walker is made of fail.

Nicko: That's awesome. I was planning on doing similar things with my DX mod the Cassandra Project. There was one puzzle I wanted to do which was impossible to do without re-loading after dying and, in the process, discovering a password, so when you get through the door the people you meet are "How on earth did you know the password?". And your character starts to realise the truth of her existence, etc.

Games are great at nature of reality stuff, I think. Forget the Tolstoy - I want to see Games' Kafka.
