I’m just posting here to point out that it’s outrageous how well Finnish people speak English.

I conjecture that Finland is a made-up country and ‘Finnish’ is actually a trait you guys picked during character creation. Plus 15% Ability To Handle Negative Things, -20% Self Esteem.

Finnish people are seriously horrible at handling negative things, that’s one trait that is shared by everyone here. As the first example that comes to mind are the suicide statistics, huge amount of alcoholism -which is problem handling correlated- and of course a my personal experiences.

Anyway It’s also true that Finns have low self esteem, but I find that to be a good trait rather than a bad one. Sadly the handful of people here who have good self esteem stand out, not in negative light but positive. Meaning that all the self centered pricks usually get noticed above the more humble masses. Well enough with my very random rambling.

1) We subtitle our TV. Instant language lessons every night.
2) We have the best school system in the world.

Now if I only had the prerequisite skill to use self-deprecating irony in this post…

I love it that the guys took the time to answer the question on hurting ourselves. I disagree to some extent, though – having worked with lots of other Europeans lately, I judge that we Finns have the lowest self-esteem (for no good reason). We don’t think we’re worthy. Thus it’s easier to ridicule ourselves than to risk someone else doing it for us. Add this to the melancholy of an isolated, sparsely populated country, and you get the kind of humor that’s witnessed here.
