I recall (vaguely) an interview with Steve Purcell about Sam and Max and I think the names came from some previous creation of his.

They were his brother’s originally less zany characters. He’d just rip the piss out of them with his own comics, until his brother officially gave them to him as a birthday present. So it’s probably coincidence that the name can sound a bit rude.

I was just in contact with Josh Mandell who wrote/co-wrote several of Sierra’s later games. He recently wrote Insecticide’s (NDS game) adventure levels. So the old guard is still hacking it!

Sam and Max were created in 1987 as a comic book not 1993 so I’d say it’s rather unlikely.

Steve Purcell worked for Lucasarts which is how I imagine the game came to be in 1993.

Great interview with Mike by the way, it’s great to see the ex-Lucasarts crew getting back together at Telltale.
