In Oregon, the crosswalk buttons don’t change the timing or anything like that, they just make the Walk signal appear at the appropriate time. Otherwise they just stay Don’t Walk the whole time. In high school I did a research project on that. Well, more of a “research project” since it was at least 75% an excuse to leave the school and get lunch elsewhere.

The pellican crossing buttons in Edinburgh certainly need to be pressed. Occasionally you stand at the crossing with someone who doesn’t realise this, and its only when the lights move past the ‘green man’ part of the cyle without letting you cross that you realise that the fool stood there hasn’t actually pressed the button.

I don’t believe the pedestrian crossings at junctions work, I just walk out when the cars are stopped that side.
