There was a woman, a Dutch woman, who gave a frightening talk about how we’re moving away from nature, so what we need to do is make computers look like tress. She had photographs. That’s crazy.

while i’d be curious to hear her talk – perhaps – the summation is most likely far more entertaining.

neat interview thus far.

I became curious too, so I had a look through the list of past speakers on the LIFT site and I think it must’ve been Mieke Gerritzen.

“Mobile phone cell antennas are being camouflaged as trees and tomatoes are turning square. Technology wants to look like nature, and nature like technology. Mieke Gerritzen is a dutch artist talking about how culture becomes nature.”

I liked the GDC much more when E3 was still around.

At least at that point, the focus was more on education and knowledge sharing.

Seriously though, I’ve become a real fanboy over the last year or so. Please ignore the comment from last week when I said you were going to “end up like Peter Molyneux” if WAR came and didn’t deliver on all your promises.
At the end of the day, people just want to see a fun game with some new ideas.

ps. I’m annoyed at the GDC folks for collapsing the Serious Game Summit that used to be in Wash, DC. That was the only conference I could make.

somehow i think this is one of things that falls under the “you had to be there” /missing word/ in terms of relating/getting excited about something.

at least reading about it all here just doesn’t do it for me.

isn’t it as much about a change of scene as anything? You go to something outside your normal range of (especially professional) experience and go “wow, this is interesting, i never knew that might be possible. It’s great that there are guys working on this” – because it’s easy to experience the happy happy glow of novel ideas when so much is new. Go back a couple of times and soon you’re thinking “oh god, here’s that guy with the orbital powerstations again, I hope he’s changed his presentation. Arrgh, arboreal computer woman, how many times have i told her i can’t finance her development programme! NO, i do NOT want a job on the video mosaic package that, having investigated it, CANNOT EVER work…”
Ultimately at both you end up with a bunch of people boring you with their own obsessive agendas, and a few people with genuinely interesting ideas. That’s conferences.
