E3: The Trailers – Age Of Booty

By Alec Meer on July 16th, 2008 at 10:34 pm.

I know exactly why you’re reading this post. And it’s exactly the same reason I clicked on the video. You’re in for a terrible disappointment, I’m afraid.

But once that’s done you might become semi-excited anew, this time at the prospect of a semi-casual hex-based strategy game about pirates. It’s an XBLA jobbie that’s coming to PC, and while it’s trying a bit too hard in the sound and vision departments, I reckon it could be kinda fun in practice. I do have a soft-spot for leftfield, lo-fi strategy. It’s possibly too silly and definitely pushing the Looney Tunes sound effects a bit too hard, but I can imagine myself spending a happy ten minutes bombing merry hell out of Kieron or someone of an evening. AND IN THE GAME.

Of all the words I’d use to describe that video, “exciting” isn’t one of them.

Will it be better than pirates? NO!!

    Sure is quiet and soothing.

Seriously, they couldn’t be bothered to throw in some piratey background music?

Am terribly disappointed, didn’t see any boots in that trailer, or any footware, not even a pair of sandals.

Did that orange ship really just sink himself and the other orange boat with the HUGE floating bomb? Lack of nautical ditties = fail.

Could we stop having embedded gametrailers videos. They almost never load and when they do they only load part of the way or are excruciatingly slow. The GameVideos and Youtube embedded videos always work.

I’m excited anyway. And they used the phrase “call of booty”!

Can’t seem to get vid working here, or on game trailers site. Others are working fine, so guess it’s broken?

erf. fixed. Must have been a Firefox 3 thing on my end.

Looks fun in a semi-cheesy way… but why pander to nostalgia with hex?

I -like- hex-based games. Fantasy General, Battle for Wesnoth, Massive Assault.. but this? No. Not really.

Perhaps hex (and turn)-based games work better for me when I get to command an army of sorts.

Looks exactly like some of the old Warcraft III maps. DotA: at SEA!, etc. Well, except for the hexes.
