Over the last year, one of the things we’ve noticed at RPS Orbital HQ is that we have some readers. At the last count, more than three. It seems that some of the loyal and most handsome of them have gathered their pocket change together to get themselves an unoffical semi-official official-but-not-quite RPS TF2 server. Oh yes.
As the RPS Steam Group broke the 1000 members mark the other day (1200 now), regulars in the chatroom lamented that in order to have a celebratory game of TF2, they had to invade the Penny Arcade server. Well no more. The Rock, Paper, Shotgun – Community Server for Servicing the Community is born.
The IP for those wanting to join in is 85.236.101.56:27115. (Ventrillo: 85.236.100.69:12384) But be aware, this belongs to the readers, not RPS, and we’re not in charge. FEAR THEIR WRATH. Huge thanks to Dartt, The Poisoned Sponge, Evo, DuBBle and everyone else involved. (Disgruntled missing names – contact me).

So, I’m guessing it’s in the US? Or is it in Europe? I guess this is a pretty useless question, considering I’m going to go try it out myself, and it should be painfully obvious if it’s on the wrong side of the pond.
If it’s in Europe and I get decent ping (I’ve got an awesome connection, but not even it connects me well to overseas servers), and there’s people there, and it doesn’t run any custom rules (like instant spawn), I’m going to be a regular!
Seems to be nn Europe, ping takes 54ms. Spiffy! :D
I’ve got a ping of 15ms here. It must be in England somewhere.

The server is in the U.K. but a few chaps from the East coast of the U.S. and Canada have reported reasonable performance so everyone should pop in and say “LOL HAI GAIZ”.
I spotted this yesterday and immediately added to my favourites. I will pop in any time I see a game going on. TF2 is a far, far superior game when played with decent folk :) Also, it is better with a mic.
Incidentally, why the Ventrillo server? Is the inbuilt talk insufficient in some way?

@Mr Pink – The ventrillo server came free with the TF2 server. It seems a little redundant with the in game voice chat and the Steam voice chat already easily available but maybe someone can find a use for it.
@Cullnean – I’ll try to arrange a way for people to contribute this week. It may involve gathering the email addresses of willing contributors and then sending out a mass payment request with paypal or setting up a donation link. I’ll have a look in to it when I get home from work :)

Guess i’ll have to give that newfangled team fortress a whack again.
We’re only keeping the arena maps on there while we get used to them… don’t worry, once we’ve sorted out what works and what doesn’t, well sort out a list of good servers mainly featuring Dustbowl, Goldrush, 2fort and a smattering of others.
What’s wrong with the arena ones? :(

Can’t think of any other site where it’s readers have done this.
Normally it’s the other way around.
Vent could be useful as two things: a way to keep the RPSites in communication without requiring us to expose ourselves to the others on the server, and overall communication when allspeak is off (which it should be).

Great server! People actually use their mics! And for a server based in Europe I get a better ping than on some American servers.
Lovely server, guys! I’ve had a lot of fun today dipping in and out, and I’ve got a newfound love for the scout, whenever I’m not getting on well with Demoman! Hope to play lots more games soon!
