Boombot

There aren’t enough games in which you’re indestructible. Even in Superman games and Hulk games you’re kept Earthly by health and energy bars. Madness! There’s nothing wrong with a good old power fantasy, but developers seem determined not to indulge us. This webgame does. In Boombot, you can fall down a hole and have to restart the level, but that’s more error than death as such. More importantly, you can’t be killed even by all the explosions in the world. See this?

This does not hurt the Boombot, not one bit. For he is INDESTRUCTIBLE.
Which is just as well, as he keeps dropping bombs everywhere. This is an indie physics-puzzle game, as approximately 98.7324235% of indie games now are, and in it you use the power of ’splodes to fling the wee fella across the level, over assorted obstacles and into a hard-to-reach exit at the other end. There are no direct movement controls, but you can place a bomb anywhere on the screen, anywhere at all. It’s a matter of moving him with the blastforce, and clearing a path by identifying what’s destructible. It’s basic to look at, until you drop a bomb on top of a pyramid of fuel cannisters and the entire screen erupts. Splendid stuff, though I’m stuck on Level 16.

You have to speed him up while he’s falling.
And after that, 17’s a real treat.
Though in 18 there’s some kind of zapping rays which also make you restart.
For some more indestructible gaming, I recommend the first (brilliant!) level of Iron Man, as long as you delete the game from your hard drive right afterwards. They give you a flamethrower too! And play Black Sabbath in the background!

16 was quite easy, use the largest bomb just to the bottom left of him after the first bounce.

@Alec Meer: On level 16 you have to ignite the bomb at the biggest size while the boombot ist still mid-air. Blow it up above him and slightly to the left.

RPS in not-playing-games-to-completion shock! Boombot is not indestructible. Electricity is his mortal foe! On level 18 they clash for the first time!
August 28th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Not indestructible: he doesn’t like electricity!
Level 26 isn’t so bad. Just do a big bomb to get him flying, then a little bomb in midair to give him that little nudge to the finish.

@cullnean: Just go straight upwards. 3 bombs should be enough.

33 is annoying me (cheers for the linkage mr meer!)
edit: got it. so much trial and fail

Fun little game, though some puzzles can be easily circumvented.

43 is a bastard.
I love the look on his face when a bomb goes off. Pure joy. The little guy loves it.

Finished. I am the Boom King!!
One thing I will say is that although a lot of the levels seem to be designed towards a particular solution, there is often a better one.
My solution to level 49 was particularly ingenious!
August 28th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Yeah, main beef is that levels can set up elaborate trick shots, but are more easily done by a more direct route of bouncing him in the air.
Okay, level 46. You will not best me.

I am also the Boom King!
Reminds me of the Demoman’s sticky-jumping in TF2. Less leg-breakage on landing, however (always good).
Nice little game, cheers Alec!

El Stevo: bloody hell! had an idea for 49 - nearly pulled it off, just ended up blasting at the wrong angle :/
August 28th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
On 49 I just positioned a couple of TNTs next to each other at the bottom left corner, put the boombot on top, destroyed the platform underneath the exit and… BOOOOOM - up he went.

stevo: yup, thats what i figured out too - your ‘ingenious’ comment prompted me to think about what i was doing… ta!

Who’s the Boom King? I’m the Boom King (Conchords ftw)
Yes, too many of them you can just dynamic-bomb him to the exit and ignore the rest of the level… still good though. 50 is quite tricky indeed.

Noc says:
I’m a bit stuck on 45. Not because it’s hard, but because all the crap going off in the background slows my framerate and makes precision juggling very difficult.
But speaking of juggling, you can do most of the levels with it. And speaking of levels, they, on the whole, don’t seem to be very good, in the sense that they tend to be more obstacle course than puzzle, and don’t seem to offer a variety of challenges as the game goes on. And there’s a bunch where he clearly just ran out of ideas.
Still, it’s alright.

Feeling slightly retarded stuck on 13…..

When I saw this I knew it reminded me of something. A bit of searching and I found it, Classic PuffBOMB, where you have a limited amount of bombs too, but you place them all out at the start (with delays if you want/need) and then press play. And no extra exploding materials.
The website says there’s a new version in the making, but that’s a message from 2007… so I wouldn’t hold my breath. Bit of a shame, because the classic version is not really a finished game, and as I remember it doesn’t allow for any saving. Youtube video of the game here.
Worth checking out if you have Windows or Mac.
Oh, and there’s Blast Miner I guess, which has those “blast the gold to the right place” levels

This game is processor-intensive and a half. It uses up all my spare horsepower while idle!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Also boom king. Makes this old work PC sound constipated.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
wow. Stuck on 16 ey?
Heh, i didn’t even notice that one go past. the only one ive had trouble with is 30.
August 29th, 2008 at 8:38 am
woot and even a yay ![]()
thanks once again RPS for making all my workmates shake their head in disbelief as they walk past my desk!

Finally I too am the Boom King. Funnily enough it was level 50 that had me stumped for the longest.
