I think this is the first time we’ve seen this particular Battlefield Heroes map, as it’s far more enclosed that the environments we’ve seen previously. This splendid trailer also shows off loads of the character adornments and costumes – in some cases far more wacky than I’d expected, but fun nonetheless. Still no word on that open beta… If there is one. Keep an eye on the official site for more closed beta key giveaways if you’re interested.

Hang on a second. Screw the trailer- that picture you used. He Is Sitting On The Plane’s Wing!
What happened at the end to the jeep? Will we be able to do that?
Still not convinced. Seems like you could totally ‘master’ it far too quickly. Needs more stuff to learn.

that is how badass closed beta players always are!
That’s the first time I’ve been convinced the game might work. There just havn’t been enough costume options shown before for me to believe anyone would pay.
But now – yeah, I’d drop a dollar on a smart red waistcoat…
I am less convinced now. I knew the game was more “informal”… but this is too much.
Oh yeah I saw this yesterday. I doubt that everyone will pay money for a costume, that’s just stupid.
I am in the beta (am I allowed to say that?) and I like the way the game is going (am I allowed to say that??).
Quinns: Yeah, I reacted that way when I saw it in one of the preview videos a while back.
I watched one guy get to a plane before another, and thought, “Man, I hate it when people take the planes before I can. This is why I don’t play BF games.”
And then Bam! Suddenly, BFH turned into something awesome. The kind of awesome you get when you can hop on a plane’s wing and pelt people with grenades and bazookas like a very irritable pigeon co-pilot.
On that note, I wonder if you could theoretically snipe from the wingtop.
I wish I had a fez.
KG
*cough*
Actually, this might just be the first game where I’m willing to use microtransactions. Just look at those costumes! That’s sooo cool.
wow, that looks dumb as hell. Who is their target audience? Its going to at least be rated Teen. Maybe teenagers with developmental disorders?
Was that a mime?
Environments look nice… players and animations not so much…
You have to assume they *want* everyone to run/swim like that but it just looks wrong to me. Character styling and graphic effects just look sub-TF2 unfortunately.
Could still be all about the gameplay of course, and the costuming will definitely raise a chuckle or two… but overall I’m not expecting this to make it on my must-play list…
+1 MacBeth
What horrible music!
Looks like shit. Do not want.
I will probably not spend any money on this, but play it I will. The music is indeed horrible.
Watched with no sound, but looked like a lot of fun. I’d definitely give it a go.
The music’s great, what are you talking about.
And it has kilts.
Looks like it’d be good for quick lunchtime bashes. I’ll certainly give it a go, and if I like it enough I might even buy a Fez. I’ve spent 50p on more stupid things.
I guess if they want to further defuse any “they’re just ripping off TF2″ criticisms, they can hold up this video as proof that they’ve clearly not actually learned a damn thing from it.
So many big macho half-naked fashion-obsessed men. It is almost subversive.
Hm… was there some easy, TF2-grade way to distinguish the teams and classes? I failed to see it.
“Iiiincoming Moustached Guy With Feather Boa. We need more MIMES!”
I think I’m NDA’d, but I like the music :P
The game itself is great, maps are spread out nicely weapon and leveling system is awesome but there something about it that doesn’t seem to have that magic. I tried real hard NOT to compare it to TF 2 but it’s hard. It’s a BF game and I sadly never got into them, it’s a good game, just not a game for me..
I found it difficult to distinguish bt the different teams…
Shame this is set in the Second World War, rather than the First, or I could speculate whether that was a Sitting On Plane Wing In The Header Camel.
Team Village People 2. Its so silly we give it away for free.
I wonder how they will deal with cheaters. My guess is they could ruin any fun that might come out of it.
Yes, according to the devblog there’s supposed to be an easy way to distinguish between the classes, which sounds good until they mention it’s the clothes. So you’ve gotta know what specific detail to look for (rolled-up sleeves = sniper! Genius!) and squint your eyes.
So yeah, nowhere near TF2’s level.
Just because it looks slightly similar to TF2 doesnt mean they are the same game or want to do the same things, stop trying to compare apples to oranges
Hrm… Battlefield Heroes Clan… dressed entirely as Mimes…
The comparison’s fair game for the way to distinguish teams and classes because for this specific matter the design principles enumerated on the BFH devblog are almost exactly the same as the ones enumerated by the TF2 team. So since they use the same theories it’s normal we end up comparing the solutions and noting BFH’s is sorely lacking.
I’ve been playing the closed beta. The way you tell classes apart is strictly through their behavior (and the special effects that go off when abilities are used).
In reality what this means is “shoot at anyone who doesn’t have a visible name over their head in blue.” (Even if you’re on the team with the red flags rather than the blue flags, friendlies=blue and enemies=red.)
In trying to figure out why it’s fun despite the fact that it’s so much less than TF2 in so many ways, here’s what I’ve come up with:
- I am half decent at it and wind up at or near the top of the scoreboard for most rounds.
- You can capture flags much more frequently and easily than control points or intel in TF2.
- The vehicles are just kinda fun. Running someone over with a tank = fun. Killing a tank while you’re on foot = fun. Getting rammed by a guy in a plane and both of you dying = fun.
- The whole outfit thing is actually kind of entertaining. (You played City of Heroes, right?)
played the beta i’m not a massive fan feels kinda flimsy, not to mention i was totally dominating most of the time, the commando seems like he needs gimped, will keep playing though, there were things i liked about it, the games are fast and fun and it’s not as hardcore as battlefield, the menus are an html + client mess of switching between your browser and the game that’s the main thing that needs fixed
stop trying to compare apples to oranges
It’s a class-based team-vs-team shooter. Even if it looked like Crysis or Audiosurf we’d be comparing it to TF2, especially since that’s what 50% of RPS readers are playing right now.
And my apples to apples point is that I hope competition from BFH will inspire the TF2 devs to add cute cartoon helicopters or something. And the BF control points, tickets & squads gametype in TF2 wouldn’t go amiss either.
I played this game at PAX. I didn’t find it to be very good.
Players move very slowly, and there’s a lack of a sprint function. Oh, and I still haven’t figured out how to distinguish players.
And it takes forever to kill people.
This is totally Second Life with guns.
did i mention what the hell is the 3rd person perspective all about, I’m defiantly not sold on that!
Gaygamer.net will love this game.
Yeah, but it’s free. So who cares? It’s not like you have to invest anything in it.
Actually if you want to be running around actually looking like the Village People rather than generic soldier #347, you have to invest.
You can also buy leveled skills instead of spending time leveling them, which may be a handicap for non-paying players.
I spent some time watching people play this, and one of the more “popular” outfits was running around in your underwear shooting at people. Also, it takes forever to kill people. And the game would be better if they played “Yakety Sax” as background music (although to be fair, this is true of many games).
So…how do we tell what team people are on if everyone’s got custom gear? Or did I miss that part?
The original introductory trailer all those months ago had me sold on this game, but the media they’re released since then has been doing a decent job of making me not want to bother with it.
also; spies will be over/underpowered with the custom clothes and lack of class difference.
Looks really, really bad. Like they’ve seen TF2 and said “how can we rip off this idea, but get it so wrong that we might literally have to beg for food for the rest of our lives?” TF2 is so styley and well thought-out – and this is just terrible. Nobody will buy it. I can almost hear Valve laughing.
