You know, what we could all probably do with about now is a hug. But instead I’m going to provide you with the news that a Chinese Korean roller-skating MMO, named Street Gears, is now open for closed-beta sign ups. No, really: a roller-skating MMO. This will be no consolation to those of you trying to get into quite another beta, especially as the Street Gears is in French and German only. I hope we anglophones get a version of it too, it actually looks kind of fun, and also kind of free to play. Grainy, fuzzy video of cell-shaded skate antics after the hop.

  1. Funkula says:

Skating and cel-shading are all well and good, but unless there’s graffiti and Japanese hip-hop I’m not interested.

  2. Okami says:

JSRF to this day remains my most played game on the original Xbox, so I think I’ll give this a try. But of course Funklua is right: Needs more japanese Hip-Hop!

  3. Alex says:

The guy in that illustration has a tiny head!

  4. Jochen Scheisse says:

Just a wild guess: Chinese developers will not include japanese hip-hop.

Maybe we’ll get the Mandarin beatdown?

  5. Yhancik says:

I’ll try that en Français, alors.

  6. Ragnar says:

I understand the rollerskating part, but there seem to be presiously little MMO in that trailer. Is it just that you can race against buddies online? Then Trackmania is an MMO too.

  7. N says:

Clearly inspired from the air gear anime…

  8. Heliocentric says:

well. Collision free skating with bonuses for syncing with your friends. Could be fun. More good games that have minimal violence are greeted. It saddens as a dad with a gaming 4 year old me how often violence is strapped to a game that doesn’t suit it.

  9. Nilocy says:

Hmm, can’t stop comparing it to JSRF… I wish they’d make a new one. :( But this looks a tad… to weird to me.

  10. Ian says:

@Jim: The characters in the trailer look like Hangul to me rather than Hanzi, suggesting the game is originally from Korea, not China.

  11. Arnulf says:

    Yay for German language preference!!

Only I’m not in the slightest interested in that kind of game. :/

(takes a closer look at the video…)

Hmm. I see only English words there. And if I’m not mistaken the other writing is Korean?

  12. Klaus says:

Looks like a nice simple, light game. But I’m being optimistic.

I noticed his less than sub par head as well. It looks like a child’s head on an adult.

Ehrg, Air Gear. The anime where everybody has to make a figure of speech about; flying, being free, or just about birds in general, every time they speak. I really hope there aren’t people named ‘Crow’, ‘Dove’ and ‘Eagle’ in that game.

  13. Heliocentric says:

a villain called vulture will be accepted however.

  14. @Ian: you’re right, I was going on its Chinese distribution. Looks like it it is Korean developed.

  15. The Shed says:

    Fuck. The music. Fuck.

For a second there it did actually look like MMO JSR. And tbh, any JSR is good JSR (they already stated that they plan on making future games). But then the music started. So they’ve essentially taken the gameplay from one of the pioneering, classic Skating titles, and lumped a piece of shit J-style pop soundtrack where the O.G. had one of the best soundtracks ever in a game.

    Disgraceful.

  16. Heliocentric says:

mute it. Get a play list ready.

  17. Dreaded Walrus says:

    Fucking QTEs? Constantly? Whilst grinding?

Also, on top of the JSR vibes, was anyone else getting a Sonic Adventure vibe from that trailer?

  18. Radiant says:

Nah the music is judged PERFECTLY.
If they sell skater customisation and power ups and with the right mechanics this game will be a cash machine.

  19. Gap Gen says:

Shouldn’t an MMO have more than one person on-screen at any given time?

  20. Nimdok says:

It’s giving me fond-ish memories of Jet Set Radio, at least…

  21. Noc says:

Oh man that is a tiny head.

  22. Hypocee says:

Aw, Shed! It may not be JSR music, but it is SEGA Blue Sky music. I hope you are not down on SEGA Blue Sky music!

Korean game with Chinese distribution? About roller skating? Looks like a link to Xu Xinyu is nearly obligatory. The thought occurs – wouldn’t freestyle slalom make a great videogame?

  23. Hypocee says:

? Sorry for whatever I screwed up there, let’s try this again: Xu Xinyu.

  24. Tommy says:

It really doesn’t look like a MMO, but it looks kind of charming.

  25. Half Broken Glass says:

Korean, Chinese, Japanese, doesn’t matter, MMOs from these countries are all the same and have only one thing going for them.
And I don’t mind rollerskate porn.

  26. Saboten says:

Any Korean MMO must contain “grind”. This one is no exception.
