Clint did an amusing live demo at PAX. First he showed off the single player options, mostly by dying a lot, and then he ended the dying by showing off the level creator, which looks really neat. Much of the level tools are procedural, so you create rivers by raising the water level until it fills the river bed you created and you create forests by choosing a biome and marking an area for the game to populate with plants. The nicest touch is the ability to drop into the level at any time, almost instantly, and check it out from the player's perspective.

'I can’t stand a game that is so linear you can see the rails of the game leading you from one scripted event to the next'

I think it's got a lot to do with the illusion of choice rather than choice itself. See the Half Life 2 games for examples of this.

CrashT: System Shock 2 did jamming horribly, horribly wrong.

Hell, it did a lot wrong, come to think of it.

I'd love it if someone competent did an updated remake of System Shock, though.

Getting very interested now, how about wildlife? Hope they put in elephants and such. Get me some big game to kill!
As far as i am concerned, sandbox games ARE the future. Getting more than a little fed up with scripted games with horrible AI, no matter how well executed or pretty (cod 4, anyone?). I'll save my rant about 'useless squad-members' that have become so popular past year for another day. I loved Stalker and (the first half of) Crysis and this title seems just the thing for me. Can't wait.

Exploding cars are the new ubiquitous crates. "there was no hood protecting the engine", oh! It all makes sense now, a flimsy hood protects the engine from gunfire because engine blocks are highly explosive and made of dynamite.
Please give me a break with the constantly exploding vehicle stuff. Gasoline does not 'explode' unless it's compressed or otherwise under pressure.
/rant
That said, I'm definitely drooling for this game now. Unfortunately a quote like "it was also our intent to give the player the freedom to complete his objectives the way he wanted" usually means the story is reduced to "destroy camp x, destroy camp y, retrieve item z, progress-toward-goal +1!"
I'm crossing my fingers, good luck Ubisoft!

That read made me go from "kinda interested" to "pretty interested". Crysis was far from as much free-form as FC2 seems to be, but I had good fun with Crysis. Yeah, signs point to me picking this up.

@Crash

I see no problem with a game being a bit frustrating now and again, it would make a change from the usual perfect weapons all the time, as long as you can have backups.

This looks very good, I can only hope that they get it right.

"Bottom line is, Far Cry 2 is a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. clone, and there is no amount of bitching that it’s already vocal fanboys can do to change the game. Having played the beta now, the game is a carbon copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with a splash of new, non-innovative ideas thrown on top to make it seem shiney."

My real comment:
I want to see this game build an amazing mod community.
