Team Fortress 2D, Anyone?

Written by Jim Rossignol on September 20, 2008 at 3:11 pm.

This has to be one of the finest entries to TIGSource’s awesome Bootleg Demakes competition. It’s Gang Garrison II, a demake of the peerless Team Fortress 2. It’s a two-dimensional version of the red-vs-blue class-based game we all know and love. In fact it’s almost the same game… only flatter. It’s got network code, heavies, snipers, scouts, the lot. There’s a video of it in action after the link, but I think you should just download it and host a server – anyone can do it!

And if you host a server and post it here, I’d love you forever.

The loading and main screen are entertaining, but playing a game would be better.

edit: I saw one server show up for a few minutes on the lobby screen, but I kept getting connection-failed errors. :(

We’re on RPS! Woohoo!

The version linked here is the Compo version that was submitted before the deadline. Please check the latest posts in the forum if you want to try the most recent version (b19 currently). It *maybe* fixes the networking bugs and contains some balancing changes and other additions. It’s still a work in progress though.

Looks a lot like the sublime Soldat. More people should play that.

I tried it a few days ago but the lack of players prevented me from actually getting a feel for the game. It has a nice style, though, that much I admit. Maybe we should organise a RPS session at some point?

PS: I got disconnected too the other day time and time again. Today I didn’t play it enough to get to that part, I guess

Found a server the I played on a bit, and it’s very well done. At the end I came back to my main TF2 class, medic, and it was awesome.

Having not played TF2 for months, this reminded me what I loved about that game.

@MedO
If you’re reading this, there’s an exploit in that the intel can be taken into the supply room, stopping the game. You probably knew already but just in case.

Been putting off checking this out after seeing it in a number of places.

Had a quick blast few mins ago, actually quite impressed- very amusing in very not quite sure why sort of way, verisimilitude I guess.

Tis an awesome demake. The music and graphics are perfectly done. It’s a bizarre coincidence that I posted about this on my blog yesterday! Or is it..?

You should check out Buddy Base 2 — possibly more interesting in that it’s a different kind of game (”1D” RTS like Medieval Clash/Steam Brigade) rather than a side-view FPS: http://isaacwilliams.net/uploads/buddybase2/demo01/

The moment I saw the screenshot I had a flashback.

Interesting concept, fun video, but I must admit that having the “real thing” makes me unwilling to try this.

I’ve played it a bit and I still can’t get the disguise and the sentry guns to work. (Perhaps somebody could offer a suggestion?)

@Juxe

The sentry guns and disguises aren’t in the game as it stands.

The article title on this one is a little confusing, since there is actually another Team Fortress game called “TF2D” or “Team Fortress 2D”, just YouTube it.
