Fyodor Dostoevsky is the greatest Ruski author out there. The Brothers Karamazov and the Grand Inquisitor therein are sheer genius and have a lot of great storytelling and some incredible philosophical points hitherto unspoken about anywhere. If you ever get a chance give at least the latter a read…

Gogol’s crazy. Only thing I’ve read of his short stories. In particular he wrote a short story called the nose about a guy who’s eating a sandwich and somehow manages to loose his nose in it, which then leads to him chasing it all over St Petersberg while it masquerades as a junior bureaucrat, among other things. Utterly bonkers, I think they made a play of it not too long ago.

Also, I seem to remember someone (was it Jim? Kieron?) writing a review of Medieval Total War in the style of Diary of a Madman (also Gogol)….

Nabokov was Russian, sure, but his best stuff was written in English in the United States. I bet most people think of him as an American author (as ridiculous as that sounds). Either that, or this board is a bunch of philistines who have never read Nabokov.

Anyway, I’ve read some Nabokov and a little bit of Notes from Underground, but I’m a little out of my depth in this thread. I’d heard of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Chekhov, etc., but a lot of these names are new to me. What’s Gogol like?
