Let's see, RPS's front page has descriptions of two city builders that involve creating cities on a persistant planet. The one is by the people who did City Life, which I don't know much about outisde of reviews. It costs $9.99 a month for the online play. The other is by Tilted Mill, who made several games I really like and are city building masters. Their game is... free? I think I know which one I want to play...

(the answer, BTW, is probably both. haha.)

Hadn't heard of this before, but it's piqued my interest...

Also, do I get geek points for recognising Mt St Helens from the digital elevation model before the voiceover confirmed it?

EA dropped the ball with SimCity, and non-Sims sim games in general, so I'm foaming at the mouth for a proper city builder.

Plugging in different "tycoon game" modules within also sounds kinda cool.

Any idea on how mod-friendly CitiesXL will be? The SimTropolis community creates AWESOME new buildings and mods for SimCity 4.

This sounds interesting (and is very much the sort of non-WOW MMO I've been advocating for), but my enthusiasm is tempered by the fact that City Life was rubbish. Still, I'm dying for a decent new city builder, so let's hope they pull it off this time.

(The slightly over-enthusiastic PR for the game here)
Nah, the GEMS are single-payment gubbinz; they're not essential for everyone, as you can work together in communities where people have different specialisations and because the blueprints for more impressive buildings/landmarks are sometimes randomly allocated.

I'd better leave it for the devs to fill you in more, as I don't want to get anything wrong. :-S

Great. Now there's another game I really want coming out in the next 6 months.

From what I've seen, this looks like it could fill the void left by Sim City becoming too dry for my tastes. My only concern is that the online mode will mean that the GEMs will become essential, rather than being "if you fancy it" mods. With competition for revenue amongst players, it could all too easily turn into a case of only those who have the willingness/ability to fork out for all the fancy GEMs being able to really compete.

Sounds like an interesting concept.

When they said these "GEM" things are "pay to play basis" to they mean if you use them you pay extra? So £9.99 for sub (for example) and you use your ski slope, you then owe £10.09?
