Eddie Van Halen On Keyboards: Guitar Geeks

Written by Kieron Gillen on November 24, 2008 at 10:33 pm.

That's totally what my first band looked like
Just been guest-hosting One Life Left with Ste Curran and Sir Ann Scantlebury (Master of the Arts). I’ll link to the podcast when it goes live tomorrow, but during the letters section one of their readers wrote in to mention a Guitar-Hero-aping (but online and without the guitar) webgame they’ve been doing. Write to One Life Left and not the MIGHTIEST PC GAMES BLOG IN ALL CREATION? HERESY. For your sins, we’ll link to Guitar Geeks aggressively and trust this will teach you to never do it again.

RPS is > than all (yes, even pc gamer since they changed chief editors). But don’t worry, guitar hero is just an over-glorified Simon Says game. No ones missing out.

OOOOOWNED! first post, and with substance! Eat it. I hope this is the 3rd post and the 2nd is someone saying “FIRST” and then crying themselves to sleep because of their failure.

What was that Guitar Hero clone where the idea was that you hold your keyboard like a guitar?

On a related note, has there been any more news from ActiBliz on whether four really is coming to PC since it appeared on the BBFC’s rating thingmawotsit?

Stunning production values, but as I’m sure people are sick of me saying, would be better as a native app than Flash.

Jerkovision whenever a new note is introduced is not the fun kind of challenging.

Pags: That’s the one.

And it looks like Bruut answered my question before I even asked it. Duh.

This is a nice little Flash game but I found that the charts don’t match the music particularly well, and it’s missing the strum element which makes it closer to, say, Stepmania than Frets on Fire.

(Speaking of Stepmania, I like that a shonky old Aphex Twin track became some kind of minor craze amongst Stepmania fans)

It’s a sad day for RPS. I thought we where above and beyond “OMG FIRST” posts :( Even if they do have “substance”

Admrial Adama is NOT impressed..and it’s not because his oldest friend is a cylon!

Gravatar Gap Gen says:

Actually, I guess you could use GlovePIE to map this game to a GH controller, although strumming would do nothing without tinkering the game itself (or perhaps you’d need to map a combination of, say a given button + strum = A/S/D/F).

Bad Leelad! Spoiler alert! Everyone knows it’s River Tam that was a Cylon all along anyway.

I started to play with Frets on Fire roughly a year ago, and had so much fun hammering my keyboard that I finally decided to get myself “real” Guitar Hero Guitars. Now I am jamming from time to time on my PC, I have a guest guitar around, there are tons of songs and mods for Frets on Fire for Rockband/GH look-and-feel, and I’d be overly happy if my girlfriend would like it too.

OK, this is a shameless advertisement, but FoF is really great. And free. :)

Gravatar Gap Gen says:

FoF is slightly slow on mine, which messes up the accuracy. Any way of improving this?

Hmm, well colour me gutless, Mr Gillen – yes, I didn’t have the nerve to submit to RPS, and yet look where it ended up… Hunted down like a dog.

In mechanical terms, GG is closer to DDR than Guitar Hero, though that’s more to do with personal preference than anything else – having a ’strum’ button felt kind of weird without the benefit of the peripheral, but there you go.

Right, I’m off to get some WOW gold – cheers!
