@Tom, I agree of course, though in someways there's a shared rejection of reality in both activites.

If you look at total number of people involved in politics; like the activists, the protestors, the party members, the bloggers, the would-be candidates, the legions of people who join letter writing campaigns, the chance are they will have failed in their goals again and again - it's just the glimmer of hope that next time will be different that keeps them at it.

Ask a Green Party or UKIP activist if they think their party can win in 2010 - you'll possibly get an answer as far removed from this world as Azeroth.

Ooh, I like the fleeting-sense-of-empowerment idea. Thanks for that, Phil. Although games give you an illusion of empowerment - and usually no more - wheras politics ought to give you real empowerment, even if often you only end up with an illusion of it.

Armitage's piece was a nice summation of the skills gamers develop, though he missed the biggest crossover between games and politics - the fleeting sense of empowerment.

Both activities hook those involved by suggesting they can change the world, be it Endor or East Finchley, though both generally end in disappointment.

Though at least in politics you can generally get laid at the summer conferences. Getting laid at a video gaming conference would entail a major lifestyle revision for me.

@Down Rodeo:
<i>"Oh wait, I remember. Someone (an author) called it a paradigm shift. Who that was I can’t remember. "</i>

That would be Thomas Kuhn, in "The Structure of Scientific Revolution". I think.

Oh good lord, they got the MP5 just right. Is that actually the sound from the original game, or did they just replicate it perfectly?

Kieron: I'm tempted to say that the simplistic-sounding "wait for old people to die" is quite probably correct. In scientific circles often the new, surely-that's-not-right theories are dismissed until the previous generation's scientists die off. People like opinions. In fact they like them so much that they tend to keep them indefinitely! I'm sure were I not as tired I could come up with an example but as it is I am racking my brains and have nothing. Might as well add [[Citation needed]].

Oh wait, I remember. Someone (an author) called it a paradigm shift. Who that was I can't remember. Christ I'm doing badly tonight.

Jesus Christ, that N'Gai can't half talk some bollocks. He said in a couple of thousand words what most right-thinking folk probably came up with after reading half of that Guardian rubbish last week.
