Spermicidal bi-sexuals are like buses. They go all night on major routes. (What? - Ed)

I noticed this up on Friday over at Qt3 on Friday. And it’s my favourite profanity-based coding thing since that list of porn-sites got onto B-17 all those years back. Basically, going through ATV-racer Pure’s file structure, gamers have found an entire folder full with extensive lists of swearing. In several languages. What’s up? Well, it appears to be the word-filters for the game (A Qt3 poster claims it’s Pure-publisher Disney’s standard one). I suspect for an age-rating-3-and-over game, this wasn’t exactly planned.

It’s quite the list. And here’s some of our favourites. NSFW, clearly.

beastial

This is primarily just cracking down on extravagant adjective abuse and bad spelling.

chick2chick
chick4chick
chickforchick
chickonchick
chicks2chicks
chicks4chicks
chicksforchicks
chicksonchicks
chickstochicks
chicktochick

I just find lists like this intrinsically funny.

slattern

Just in case your gran gets online and starts trash-talking strangers.

copulated
copulates
copulating
copulation

And to cut off the mouthy biologists.

fornicate
fornicates
fornicating
fornication

And the mouthy fundamentalist Christians.

dildoe

And the general illiterate. Though that’s kinda understandable.

domination

What… I’m not allowed to win repeatedly against a lesser player? I don’t understand.

hairpies

With my terrible comprehension, whilst scanning the list I thought this read “Harpies”. Poor Greek Mythic creatures, thought I.

nymph

Actually, maybe it is cracking down against mythology.

pen15

John’s proudest moment is when he made someone join the PEN 15 club over the internet. As it should be.

scheiss
scheisse

I like that the English list finds time to crack down on German swearing.

Loads more, obvious, including some we had to look up because American swearing is strange and underdeveloped compared to the mother tongue. Generally speaking, you suspect the list was pushed up to full size by someone clicking through Urban Dictionary and selecting words at random.

Of course, we can’t understand the foreign ones, so RPS’ overseas contingent should feel free to point out their own. Er… with some asterisks, because they’ll turn up in the comments thread to the right and we don’t want RPS to become Gaming’s hotbed for non-English-profanity.

Interesting to note that “Fanny” doesn’t appear on the English UK list, which will surely lead to the children of the world being corrupted by Scottish, vagina based slang.

  2. Dominic White says:

On a semi-related note, the game with the best/worst ever word filter was the PC version of Phantasy Star Online – not PSU, the original game.

See, they went and censored pretty much everything, either as words, or parts of words. Among the censored terms was ‘ass’.

This wouldn’t have been so bad, were there not a very common enemy type called the Grass Assassin. Any attempt to talk about this enemy type would come out as Gr*********in – so me and my friends just referred to them as Grins from then on.

Any other word filters you lot have seen that make basic communication difficult?

  3. SteveHatesYou says:

    My personal favourite is “rumpranger.”

  4. LeFishy says:

I remember a game that would censore the Hell in Hello. I think it was Guild Wars but the word filter was optional.

  5. Furbomb says:

    My personal favorite is “rumpranger.”

just about to say the same. ….and Yes, he protects the asses of humanity, riding his shiny stallion .

  6. BC says:

    Daily Mail Comment:
“I have bought this game for my daughter for Christmas ….. Christmas Day should be interesting!”

    I doubt it.

The first thing that struck me about that Daily Mail article is that the lad has a pink DS.

  8. James T says:
    My personal favorite is “rumpranger.”

just about to say the same. ….and Yes, he protects the asses of humanity, riding his shiny stallion .

    Actually, it’s “rum pranger” — anti-drink-driving censorship.

  9. Pags says:

Actually, it’s “r u m. p. ranger?”. he’s a very foul man who disappeared seven years ago after he called a woman a ‘cunting shit-vagina’. It’s rumoured that he likes ATV-racing games.

  10. BC says:

Best swear I have seen was graffiti saying “cunt-fucker”

    …erm, yes.

  11. RC-1290'Dreadnought' says:

Anaalkever made me laugh. Its supposed to mean something like anal beatle.

  12. Nick says:

    I love this comments thread.

  13. Geb says:

Wait wait wait… the game has its profanity filter applied at the user’s own computer, based on a list the user has access to? I wonder what happens if you rewrite the list…

  14. Tei says:

@Geb: you hacker!.. maybe the filter is again on the server. If not, you will be able to see some words other people will be unable to repeat …or fight back. Is like a griefers wet dream, …humm….

  16. bildo says:

“american swearing is strange and underdeveloped”

    lol really?

  17. A Delicate Balance says:

Awesome! None of the Québec French “sacres” are in there.

So I could say “Osti de crisse de câlice de sacrament de tabarnak de ciboire de viarge; Disney sont fous!”

Or something like that. Typical – pretend nobody in North America speaks French, when there are about 7 million of us.

  18. A Delicate Balance says:

@Tei: If you can use the words to explain to someone else how to change their list, then you can undermine the system! Let the revolution begin!

  19. Xirex says:

I’m kind of surprised to not find YIFF on the list. I mean, this is DISNEY we’re talking about!

  20. cullnean says:

nah best swearing i have seen/heard comes from blade III

ryan reynolds nabs it with “cock juggling thunder-cunt”

i have high hopes for the deadpool movie!

  21. BrokenSymmetry says:

Another fun Dutch word on the list: “breezersletje” (a young girl that will do anything for a breezer drink).

  22. Ergates says:

Also, what exactly is the point of having a distinct English_UK file if they’re going to leave all the spellings the same as the US one: “pedophile”? (somone who likes feet).

Or maybe they actually mean foot fetishists and they don’t object to child abuse….

  23. Arnulf says:

Update: @Matt Kemp, thanks for the clarification. Yes, that makes sense actually.

I found the german pendant. I learned a thing or two. ;)

But Sackgesicht is still missing :)

  24. James G says:

I notice the words bisexual and homosexual appear on the banned list, but hetrosexual doesn’t. How very DisneyWorldOrder. I’m surprised “single mother” isn’t on there too.

Yeah, I noticed that as well, likewise for gay and lesbian vs. straight. One of the subtle ways society tends to reinforce the notion that being gay is ‘other’ and corupt. Of course, I’m sure the writers of the list would claim that ’straight’ in never used as an insult, whereas ‘gay’ is. Unfortunately their solution results in allowing straight folks to discuss their sexuality, while preventing gay folks from doing the same, well unless they want to describe themselves as poofs.

On the greek mythology theme, it also has something against the island of Lesbos!

Edit: Wow! The Brit list clearly wasn’t compiled by a Brit, it includes wetback, but not Paki! (And sorry for the usage. Even in a context of discussion, racial slurs make me uncomfortable.)

Edit2: Not Mitchell and Webb fans I see, mention of Peepshow is forbidden!

  25. matte_k says:

What a fucking great thread :D

  26. DigitalSignalX says:

Thankfully, my favorite “Lungbutter” is still in the clear.

  27. Saul says:

Off topic, but if we’re doing our favourite graffiti, my all time fave is:

“SUCK MA BUNS HOLE!” (painted on a cliff by a highway).

  28. Josepi says:

    Slattern! Ahaha.

RE: Scrabble game with “Junior” option:

A spokesman for Ubisoft said: ‘We are sorry the game has caused concern, but it includes a “junior” option that stops it using unusual or offensive words.’

But Mrs Carrington insisted: “But I didn’t check the options so I’m going to keep complaining to the interwebz news and pretending everything is your fault, I’m pathetic and can’t act responsibly.”

Fixed quote. I feel sorry for her kid, and anyone else she comes into contact with, for that matter.

    What a shame.

  29. Vanderdecken says:

I love how they censor the existence of homosexuality. So if I decide to come out in an online game… what do I do?

  30. Kong says:

When did I hear “motherfucker” the first time? I believe it was some bad movie from hollywood. I learned to use “fuck” on a more or less regular base in Great Britain though. I am very grateful for both, in GErmany we only had scheisse in my youth. All shit no fuck. Terribly boring. For fuck alone I feel a deep friendship for the british.
The german list misses Mutterficker (moddurfokker -are we not one happy profane family?) and Kackvogel (which I learned from a german-turkish friend. He translated it from “Piskusch” -shitbird- in his kurdish mother tongue.
Let us have a UN festival of profanity. Fuck for world peace.

  31. Kong says:

The have marijuana in the german list, it is missing in the english.
    What about cannabis/hemp?
The lists are incomplete, how totaly irresponsible.
    What about frigging/frakking?
This thread serves as a great means for THEM to complete their database. May they drown in dünnschiss from a thousand alcoholics.

  32. A Delicate Balance says:

@Vanderdecken: “So if I decide to come out in an online game… what do I do?”

I’d suggest saying “I’m coming out” but I think you’d be lucky if you can use the word “come/coming”.

  33. A Delicate Balance says:

Actually, I notice that comestain, cum and cumstain are on the list, but naturally enough “come” is not. So I can “come all over your face” in a Disney game and that’s fine.

  34. Kong says:

    @A Delicate Balance

yeah, as somebody mentioned above, they have to censor all words. Only smileys in the future.

  35. TreeFrog says:

Wow. I only pointed this out on your own Pure demo thread two months ago.

  36. Rombo says:

Okay, so I’ve only just glanced at the German list, but I saw a funny one after about half a second. “Analverkehr” – anal traffic? Really?

  37. Thirith says:

“Verkehr” is also the German word used for “intercourse”.

  38. CyberSkull says:

I’m surprised they didn’t use a regular expression engine for this.

(boys?|girls?|chicks?|guys?|m[ae]n|wom[ae]n)(2|4|to|for|on)(boys?|girls?|chicks?|guys?|m[ae]n|wom[ae]n) would have cut a chunk out of that list (and this is less than 5 minutes of thought).

  39. Finally, my life is complete. I have read a game journalist saying slattern.
