The reasoning behind the CRT monitors kids is the faster refresh rate, every millisecond counts for those guys, also by default starcraft is stuck at something like 800X600 so any larger screens than that just results in distortion.

I remember the first PCG article on Starcraft 2 after it was launched in Korea had it described by con-goers as "Golf 2". Which is a terrifying thought. Anyone who doubts Blizzard's power and influence as a developer/publisher needs to remember that they control the productivity of a nation. How many other corporations can equate to that? Newscorp maybe?

I smirk at the great irony: Doesn't this seem like a North Korean Matrix inspired dream? A populace so engrossed in state-controlled, mindless MMO's that they've lost free will, unable to protest, isolated from outside influence, unable to escape the addiction.

This whole topic makes for a great Orwellian sci-fi novel. And yet, it once again proves it: Truth is stranger than fiction!

@Andy, that seemed weird at the time. Behind those two players were huge plasma screens for the crowd to watch the game, yet the players were working tiny little CRTs.

Time Commanders was more game-showish, Decisive Battles was more of a typical educational show.

And re-reading the Korea Gaming excerpt again, I still shake my head. Korean gamers and Western gamers are entirely different beasts. The former go to online games to hook up with people in real life. The latter, if they spend too much time in a game, run the risk of "pulling wife aggro."

And the fact that I can even understand that phrase makes me feel a bit sad.

@jonfitt: The History Channel had a show called Decisive Battles that used Rome: Total War to render ancient battles. I'm guessing it's similar to Time Commanders, but it only lasted for a season or two.

Hey Jim, can you write a post about Time Commanders for the readers who aren't in the UK?
What with a new Total War coming out soon, I think those who never saw it would find it interesting.

Did they ever go back and do another series? I think it'd go down quite well on the History Channel.
