Chaz: He's not sitting on a huge pile of cash because he's almost never asked for money. Tempest 2000 was probably the most commercial thing he ever did.

Personally I think Jeff Minter gets more credit than he is due. Having been a gamer since the days of the Vic 20, I can't honestly say I've ever played a single Jeff Minter game that I've enjoyed. He's an over rated hippy. I mean if he's been such a big influence during the formative years of computer gaming, how come he isn't sitting on a huge pile of cash? And don't tell me he gave it all to a Llama sanctuary.

I fail to see the point of comparing N+ with Space Giraffe. They are both games on XBLA. The similarities end there.

It struck me as an apparently random cacophony of noise

Well, that's the whole point. The noise isn't random - it's utterly vital to successfully playing the game, probably more so than any other game ever written. Most arcade games can be played almost as well with the sound off - with SG you wouldn't have an earthly.

The game really does have a remarkable amount of depth to it, which makes it all the more sad that most people (including some so-called professional reviewers) give up on it within a couple of minutes.

Kevin: Still playing it now and working my way through - I got to a level where my skill was enough to make a load of progress, but am now hitting a bit where I suspect I have to rewind and master some early stuff again.

Fantastic article. I remember being really excited for the potential of the game. 1up gave it a 6, though the review was still fairly supportive. Then the 2/10 came and though I sensed the reviewer failed to understand what the game was trying to do, it still kept me from buying the game.

The hardcore gamer in me now challenges me to buy it. Though after reading this I will definetely try and remember it's not all about level progression.

When I played the demo on XBox some months back, I quickly discovered that I could not see what was happening.

You quickly discovered that you weren't very good at a game you had never played before. That's amazing.

@Mark:
Try the PC demo's 'slightly less insane' mode, then. It looks very nice, and I could see what was going on... most of the time.

When I played the demo on XBox some months back, I quickly discovered that I could not see what was happening. It struck me as an apparently random cacophony of noise atop an epileptic's nightmare of a light show that periodically spewed unfunny referential catchphrases.

Then again, what do I know? I'm a narrowminded XBox user.

The main problem of SG was the format of choice.
The typical XBOX user is too narrowminded to apreciate anything that is not a "follow the arrow and shot" game.

Sadly the very same will happen to Darwinia.

Gnarf: making personal attacks or insults based on what anyone thinks about game pricing is very immature.

Awesome. I'll have to do that another time though :'(

The point of my previous post was that saying that you don't think the price is right is mostly just talking about money and yourself, possibly marketing. And just a little bit about Space Giraffe. E.g. as far as I'm concerned if a game is worth playing it's worth $20. And I think Space Giraffe is better than the games you listed. So by saying stuff like that, it's not really apparent what you mean. I just have to try to guess how good you think Left 4 Dead is, how much money you've got, and so on.

I’m very rich, and I buy and play an awful lot of games. Odds are very good that I have way more money than you do. FYI, wealthy people are cheap spenders and good at saving.

NEAT! I suggest spending some of your riches on Space Giraffe. It is a very good game.

I admit, it’s the unfairness which is my reservation. I think about 13 quid is a totally fair price to play for a game.

So if it is totally fair, there is no unfairness. Awesome. Manly men buy it on 360 and on PC anyway, so you get it for super cheap by getting only the PC version :)

And really. There is no unfairness. It's just to get the 360 version instead if its existence somehow makes a difference to someone.
