I think Defense Grid is really a great game. The tower defense genre really needs some professional development because there is a lot of innovation to do in this genre.

Also it costs around 12€ now on steam. Is that like 18$ or 15$?

Anyway, yes the game requires steam but that's just because of their achievements. Direct2Drive, or whatever company it was, didn't have correct support for their achievements and they had to switch to a new platform very quickly before the dead line caught them. Hence the steam is needed even it wasn't said anywhere that properly. (But I think they announce it better now.)

And yes, it is worth it.

Here's some "rather long" praise text for it: http://defensegrid.hiddenpath.com/node/599

I can't believe how many people are complaining about the price of this game. It's 20 bucks. That's the price of a movie if you get popcorn and soda while you're there. And the enjoyment is over in a couple of hours.

Tower Defense games you can play for many many hours of enjoyment. I just discovered this game and it appears to be very polished from all accounts. I can't wait to give it a try. I've seen many games that weren't nearly as shiny for the same price.

Sure a demo would be nice. But if you want all your games to be high quality and free, you're living in a dream world. Pay for quality and enjoy it. Most new retail titles cost $50 new. This is a steal.

I wish there was a direct buy option since I'm not a fan of having to install Steam to play this. That and the lack of a demo are the only pitfalls logistically. Now it's off to give this game a try! I am a huge fan of Master of Defense and have been waiting years for a new version to be released. It's nice to know there are other TD games around to enjoy.

Yeah, I'm surprisingly engrossed for a TD game! The presentation is great, though, and the balance is pretty much perfect (I won't knock the Cannon Towers because I love them so...)

Probably wouldn't have taken the leap without a demo if Steam hadn't given us a quarter off, but I'm extremely happy with my $15 purchase. Thanks for leading us to this, RPS!

Defense Grid rocks my socks and has me hooked! I can't remember how long it's been since I've been seriously addicted to a game. Can't wait for more levels or whatever else they're going to put out.

Just bought it and am having a blast with it. I'm a tiny bit frustrated with one particular map, but then again, I'm just pumping towers everywhere and hoping for the best.

Might have to start using my brain this time around. Hmpf.

I hear demo coming soon. But why wait - Steam is having a storewide sale. Defense Grid is 25% off. Good 'nuf for me. I love bargains, and this was a steal.

I love TD games, they are the perfect filler game. I love the look of this game, but with no demo, there's no way I can justify spending that much money on it...

No cliffski it doesn't amaze you. It makes you angry. You angry person of the webs you.

Serious. I'd sell over steam to increase my profile, but not ONLY steam. Drmphobe money is as good as anyone elses. Also. This game would be a nice little stick it on a usb and play during lunch game, when my monies reallign i'll be getting hinterland from impulse rather than steam for just that reason. At least that way if i fail my degree i have a reason i can identify rather than have to face being stupid.

Steam doesn't do that, it doesn't even claim to do that. The most that can be said of Steam releases is that they typically stave off zero-day piracy. After that, it's pretty much guaranteed to be out there soon, just like any other game.

I was also wondering why they don't just sell direct themselves. Heck, if 2D Boy can manage the resources (and that's just two guys), these people ought to be able to. Unless it's some sort of exclusivity deal. Who knows, maybe they're getting a deal on the Steam release, it's not as if we know what the contract was. Plus releasing on Steam does give them a lot more advertising. For some people there's probably also a "trust" factor above what you'd normally see for "some dudes taking some money for a game off of their website".
