As I’m already atrophying my feeble soul by posting about viral marketing, I might as well show you this too. THQ decided to build a real-life Space Marine Rhino APC to promote the upcoming Dawn of War II (on which we hope to have a Wot I Think soon-ish). If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a short video of a science-fictional tank crushing a car should certainly make up for the brevity of this post’s word count:

Ok, the game may leave me a bit cold but this makes almost makes up for it.
11/02/2009 at 18:40 Jack says:
That linky you got there don’t work, Alec.
11/02/2009 at 18:42 MisterBritish says:
A working Rhino and they couln’t spring for a space marine helmet? For shame!
Still cool though…
11/02/2009 at 18:51 Fumarole says:
We need more car-crushing videos on RPS.

Far into the future and mankind has forgotten that sloped armour is better than the straight ‘box’ kind. Tsk, tsk.
11/02/2009 at 19:26 Rath says:
If only it had looked that good at Games Day last year, where it just sat there and did nothing. They could have gunned the engine at least once. Ho hum.
11/02/2009 at 19:29 Lord_Mordja says:
Cool!
Make a Dreadnought next.
11/02/2009 at 19:30 Fat Zombie says:
I’ve never been too impressed with the design of the Rhino APC (and subsequent tanks of the Space Marines). As above said, box armour is fairly rubbish; but also, it just looks faintly… lame.
The Imperial Guard stuff, like the Chimera, actually looks a little more awesome.
11/02/2009 at 19:44 Lord_Mordja says:
Well, it’s not bad for a tractor…
11/02/2009 at 19:54 Jonas says:
Man, what is the CO2 footprint of that thing!?
11/02/2009 at 19:59 Dreamhacker says:
Crush it in the name of the Emperor!
Possibly the most beautiful tank I’ve ever seen. :D
11/02/2009 at 20:13 Darkelp says:
This is the reason I love being a geek, that was an epic video.
Almost as good as that scary walking robot thing that will kill us all.
You know! The one that looked like a hunter from Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Aye, good times.
11/02/2009 at 20:30 Alaric says:
This would definitely win against the fan-made Warthog.
11/02/2009 at 20:35 The Poisoned Sponge says:
I do find it funny they’ve got this promoting the game when there isn’t actually a Rhino in the game. At least not the MP.
11/02/2009 at 20:40 Larington says:
APC? I’d much rather see an ultra heavy tank get done in style, or maybe just a medium one.

“101 Ways to Kill an Eldar”
I’d watch that for sure…goddamn space fairies.

The lack of 30 rounds a second automatic grenade launchers and choral battle chants does not impress me.

“cosplay” = massive tagging win
11/02/2009 at 21:53 Fumarole says:
Sloped armor is great for defense, but not so much for internal load capacity.
11/02/2009 at 21:54 Calabi says:
You couldnt fit eight or so fully armoured space marines in that.
11/02/2009 at 21:55 phlebas says:
Does it go faster because it’s red?
11/02/2009 at 22:19 jalf says:
We’re gonna get a baneblade next, right? :D
11/02/2009 at 22:43 Subject 706 says:
Internal load capacity is great and all, but box armor = death from AT weapon.

Nice to see THQ spending their money so wisely during these tough economic times.
I am not sure if I am being sarcastic about that or not.
11/02/2009 at 23:05 Rei Onryou says:
I remember seeing that at the Eurogamer Expo and just thinking to myself “its great and all, but I wanna see it in action”. My prayers have been answered!
11/02/2009 at 23:20 Dorian Cornelius Jasper says:
How much for the Rhino?
11/02/2009 at 23:23 theleif says:
@Jonas
Man, what is the CoH2 footprint of that thing!?
Corrected
11/02/2009 at 23:28 Jante says:
For those arguing that box armour = death.. Is Warhammer 40k really famed for it’s realism? And even if you consider that in lore, it’s apparent that they use ancient tech and don’t really innovate anything at all. Technology is a religion/works by magic. And in terms of materials used, maybe slope/box is irrelevant? Who cares, it’s exploding pixels (or miniatures) we are talking about here!
11/02/2009 at 23:28 rabbitsoup says:
what is so cool about this?? i really just don’t get it red box on tracks = fail

YOu guys are fucking weird….seriously weird. It is a real life moving replica of a 40k Rhino ffs, how is that not totally awesome? Stop being wannabe Fonzi’s and admire the awesome that is teh Rhino!
I want one for work.
12/02/2009 at 00:35 Arathain says:
Right, they think their technology works because applying sacred oils appeases the Machine Spirits. They replicate ancient designs, and understand almost nothing, particularly since the ultra-fanatical, ritualistic environment of your average Chapter promotes free thinking almost not at all. Sloped vs. box is replaced by whether chanting the five times a day will make the engine run smoother than four.
And of course: someone made a sci-fi tank, and used it to crush cars, and you lot are complaining about the realism?!
(Psst: I love arguing about non-existent things too…)
12/02/2009 at 00:46 Bhazor says:
Any idea what scale that is?
I mean it’s impressive it can crush a car but I’m also pretty certain a space marine could carry that like a back pack.

Actually I read that chobham and similar modern ceramic tile armours prefer a perpendicular hit to most angles, at least against kinetic penetrators.

That’s the funniest, most random video I’ve seen in the last week — well besides the smoking three year old Chinese kid.
12/02/2009 at 04:08 Zig says:
I’d ride that to work.
12/02/2009 at 04:55 Nervous Little Tit says:
Well, based on this advert, DoWII is going to be shit.
Gimmick-tastic horseshit.

12/02/2009 at 10:07 Bobsy says:
Man, that’s an ugly tank. And boring, too.
12/02/2009 at 11:00 Dagda says:
I. . .I can come up with a bunch of perfectly valid justifications for the view that that video/vehicle is rather lame.
And yet, having finished watching it, I think that these are tears in my eyes.
12/02/2009 at 11:48 Klumhru says:
Pay someone to make a pointless rendered video of your game that tells no-one anything about your game.
OR
Buy a surplus M113, paint it up and add some random bits to make it look like a Rhino. Drive over cars.
I’d go with option two as well.
12/02/2009 at 12:30 SPLastic the Exarch says:
Now if they can get a Wraithlord working, everything will be well in the world.
…Or we could build a Craftworld!

Video games and other similar games have dominated most games. Every kid wants to own one. They all want to fight crime, enemies and monsters and save the day. Well, they can do more than that in the Dawn of War game.
