No Brainer: Dead Rising 2

By Jim Rossignol on February 10th, 2009.

Capcom have been busy promoting their games on PC, and that continues with the confirmation of the sequel to their ultra-popular comedy zombie-bashing game, Dead Rising. The new game, which does not have a release date, continues the general theme of defeating the shambling hordes. Capcom explain: “Dead Rising 2 is set several years after the infamous zombie invasion of Willamette. Unfortunately, the zombie virus was not contained at the conclusion of Dead Rising, spreading unchecked throughout the United States and Dead Rising 2 depicts a country where zombie outbreaks continue to strike.” And that inevitably means more running around with a frying pan, braining the undead. The first shots seem to show horror fun in Vegas, which seems appropriate. Trailer after the hop.

NYCC MMO Footage Part 2: Champions Online

By John Walker on February 9th, 2009.

Does it look less cel-shaded?

Following on from this morning’s demonstration of Star Trek Online’s character creator, there’s finally more footage of Champions Online. Since Kieron brought you the definitive coverage of the game so far last July, it’s been pretty quiet. However, a very brief glimpse appeared at New York Comic Con, and it’s below.

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 7

By John Walker on February 9th, 2009.

OMG!

Yes, yes indeed, it’s back. The RPS Electronic Wireless Show returns after an embarrassing amount of time. Jim and John get together to discuss the most important gaming news of the week, such as the opening of Half-Life, snowmen, and why you should give your children the MMR vaccine. However, we also manage to squeeze in discussions about Men Of War, Burnout Paradise, and EA’s slippery release schedule.

In a new and exciting twist, we also take quite a lot of our lead from Twitter. This is something we plan to do in future, and hopefully using RPS’ Twitter account. (However, just for the moment neither of us knows the password for that one, so we used mine. We’re a slick machine!)

Why The Long Face? Star Trek Alien Creator

By Jim Rossignol on February 9th, 2009.

As you might expect from the Star Trek MMO, there’s going to be loads of scope to create blue-in-the-face Federation lackeys, and continue Star Treks fine tradition of sticking things to the foreheads of humanoids. It looks pretty nifty in action, even if we saw this years ago in Eve Online. Trailer after the jump.

Wot I Think: Burnout Paradise

By Jim Rossignol on February 9th, 2009.

Burnout Paradise was released last week on PC, via a gigantic time-limited demo. It was one of the most popular console games of last year, thanks to its open-world racing model. But is it any good? Here’s Wot I Think.

Playing Burnout Paradise on PC was rather like biting into a large, delicious sandwich, filled with quality meats and condiments. Sadly the first bite revealed that the sandwich also contained an elastic band. Once the inedible foreign article had been spat out, and cuss words uttered, the meal was delicious. After all, this is one of my favourite sandwiches. And I am so very, very hungry.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on February 8th, 2009.

Sundays are for finding yourself somehow awake at a silly hour with a lack of sleep because you’ve got a comic signing at 10am. 10am? 10pm, possibly. 10am is madness. Anyway – that means I better compile this list of writing found by the good ship RPS across the week and resist linking to songs I found myself singing while replacing central words with the name of a talented comics artist. Go!

WW2: General Commander: Bulging Demo

By Tim Stone on February 8th, 2009.

ww2a

Battle of the Bulge wargames aren’t exactly novel, but it’s been ages since anyone recreated the last major German offensive of the War without using hexes or turns. Spanish studio Games GI are the people behind – deep breath – World War 2: General Commander: Watch On The Rhine. Going by the surprisingly hefty demo they seem to know what they’re doing. Though the swarmy AI and simplistic logistics won’t impress Airborne Assault aficionados (who, incidentally, are waiting patiently for their own Bulge game) the trim UI and understated 3D visuals possibly will.

NYCC: DC Universe

By Jim Rossignol on February 7th, 2009.

Could there be a more appropriate game to show at NYCC? These DC Universe developer walkthroughs contain a substantial mass of in-game material, including some villains doing their evil unpleasantness. Also some PvP in which a dude gets frozen into a block of ice and then bounced off a wall.

I’m quitely optimistic about this one – it doesn’t look particularly startling, but I’m hoping it will make a fun port of call for pervert-suit action. Quite whether it will be this, or Champions Online, which takes the next-generation super-crown, it’s hard to say.

NYCC: Prototype

By Jim Rossignol on February 7th, 2009.

Prototype is back on course for release in June, and has had a big showing at NYCC. It’s perhaps a little less impressive than it was when we saw it a year ago, but hopefully all that extra time will pay off. The three-way biologic war on the streets of NYC still looks ludicrously violent. I think Gillen is going to unload some thoughts on this next week, having seen it at the show, so I’ll leave you to the walkthroughs.

NYCC: Battlefield 1943 Dev Commentary

By Jim Rossignol on February 7th, 2009.

The New York Comic Convention (which is being attended by our own man-of-at-least-two-talents, Kieron Gillen) is in full swing, and this year it is being attended by many videogame companies. This means a minor deluge of videos from various sources, some of which I’ll post up here. First up: Battlefield 1943, with a developer narrating. Now isn’t this interesting: signs of that Battlefield Heroes parallel development breaking through here? Quite possibly, it does look rather bright and smooth and beautiful. Also far away from the painterly militarism of Battlefield 2. I can hear the howls of anti-console anguish from here.

Additionally, there’s this comment in the GameTrailers thread: “no blood? i wish u could see his body teared apart” Er hmm. (There is blood.)

It Might Just Exist: The Fool & His Money

By John Walker on February 6th, 2009.

Graphics busting.

There are a few games that immediately throw me back into memories of childhood, with accompanying swooshing noises and event-based montages with calendar pages flying through. Games like Dungeon Master, Zak McKracken, and The Fool’s Errand. The last of these is possibly the least known, and the most peculiar, but just looking at screenshots of the tarot-based puzzle collection sends my head spinning. Which means I’m unable not to be interested in the long-promised sequel, The Fool & His Money. While many have thrown around words like “vapourware”, after six years of development (and many years of selling it on pre-order), a demo has appeared.
