Cursor*10 All Over Again

By John Walker on February 24th, 2009.

I'm my favourite person to play multiplayer with.

Spooks. I was just about to check Neko Games site, to see if there might be a new Hoshi Saga (the series of micro-puzzles where you try to find the star – go play all three), and glanced at IndieGames along the way. There’s something better than a new Hoshi Saga! There’s a new Cursor*10.

Dawn of War II, Extra-Judged

By Alec Meer on February 24th, 2009.

I tend to think it’s a hallmark of a game being a wee bit special if I carry on playing it after I’ve filed a review of it. Because what I think is so terribly important and always 100% right, you see. Such has been the case with Dawn of War II, which has successfully managed to keep me from away from other, more pressing work for the last couple of days. One big reason for this has been wading back in on the Primarch difficulty setting (that’s ‘Ultra-bastard-hard’ in proper English), where my concerns about how relatively tactic-free the Sergeant setting was have been given a gentle shoeing.

There Be Ninja Houses Here: Takeda 3

By Kieron Gillen on February 24th, 2009.

The bloody fog better not be back

This is bugging me. There’s a demo for the forthcoming Daimyo-Total-War-esque thing Takeda 3 out. I know I haven’t played one of the other Takeda games. I do know that I played something that looked so identical to it for a demo write up here and can’t remember it at… oh, wait a minute. It was Sango 2. And they do look identical. The biggest difference I can see without playing – as (er) I’m busy playing another Total War-esque game today. Yes, the very Total War-esque one with the muskets – is that Sango 2 had a 1.3 gig demo whilst Takeda 3 has a 800Mb one. Less content or improved Magitech compression tech? It’s hard to tell. Anyway – details on the game on Takeda 3′s site proper and you can download it from here. Hurrah for (er) demos.

It features Ninja Houses. They look like this. They have Ninjas inside, presumably, which must make them easier to find than legend would have it.

UT2D: SuperMario

By Jim Rossignol on February 24th, 2009.

It’s early in the morning, and this side-scrolling deathmatch mod makes me feel somewhat queasy. I found it while poking around on Offworld, and while it’s not new it certainly deserves a mention. If just for weirdness: 2D deathmatch with the UT3 weapons and avatars, but with the sounds and background music of SuperMario. It is distinctly not right. You can download it from here, or watch it in motion after the jump.

Interview: Codies on FUEL

By Jim Rossignol on February 24th, 2009.

FUEL, the quasi-apocalyptic open world racer due later this year, is a labour of love for French developers Asobo. They’ve have been working on it for several years, while developing a series of other, lesser games. Helping them realise this vision is the racing game team at Codemasters, who already have DIRT and GRID, under their belts. We talked to racing game chap and Executive Producer David Brickley about garage helicopters, exploration-based racing, and the latest four-letter acronym.

RPS: There are open world racing games, and there’s… this. 5000km2? How the hell did you make so much terrain?

Scout Update Day 5: The Force-A-Nature

By John Walker on February 24th, 2009.

Hot dog!

As spoilerised last week, the last Scout weapon upgrade has been officially announced by Valve, the Force-A-Nature. “Anything this baby hits better PACK A LUNCH, ’cause it’s going for a ride!” It’s a double-barrelled shotgun with a kickback so powerful it can rocket-jump.

It seems that if you’re in the air when you fire this monstrous shotgun, the recoil will propel you upward. Bouncy Scouts just got bouncier. It’s going to have a hefty impact on any it hits, balanced out by taking a big long time to reload.

Found: Lost Planet 2

By Jim Rossignol on February 23rd, 2009.

We can only assume that Capcom’s ongoing policy of supporting the PC means that there will be a Lost Planet 2 on the deskbox, especially since we had the original Lost Planet. I struggled through the original, eventually deciding I loathed its stupid energy-grab mechanic and annoying boss battles. Still, there’s always room for optimism, and Lost Planet 2′s huge announcement trailer isn’t exactly short on bangs, or funky robots, or jungles. Watch out Crysis! Go take a look, downways.

DC Universe, Champions: NYCC (Much) Cop?

By Kieron Gillen on February 23rd, 2009.

Pants on the outside, gameplayability on the inside. Also, genitalia.

[NYCC is getting ever more distant, so this is probably the last of the round-ups of games I played swiftly there. Unless I do a round-up post of the things I played hyper-quick or just watched. And... go!]

This is a Comicon. Clearly, I couldn’t help but play these two. With the two competitors for the MMO Superhero crown within twenty or so metres of one another, it makes a lot of sense to play one, then immediately head over to the other in a feat of superhuman videogames journalism. By which I mean, playing a game and saying what I think of it. I’m hardly Batman.

Riddick: Assault On Dark April

By Alec Meer on February 23rd, 2009.

At last we have a release date for the remake-come-sequel to Starbreeze’s brawn+brains opus, The Chronicles of Riddick. Seems like the thing’s been in development for ages, presumably because at some point in the process it sprouted a whole new storyline in addition to high-definitionifying the original Escape From Butcher Bay Campaign. We’ll get to hear Vin Diesel pretending the last five years of career suicide didn’t happen and stepping back into the gravelly larynx of his most successful character on April 7th.

Well, I say “we”, but I mean “you Americans.” We Europeans have to wait until April 24th. Atari are distributing, and I have this to say to them…

Time Unravels: New Singularity Trailer

By John Walker on February 23rd, 2009.

Mmmm, toasty.

I’ve made one of my official decisions. Singularity is going to be good. If, for whatever reason it turns out to not be good, Raven forfeit the right to make games any more. Times are harsh, my wrath is mighty. So far the teaser output has been of a really entertaining standard. In rather good news, there’s a new trailer out, and it shows in-game footage. It’s below.
