I Am Rubber, You Are Shoe: Monkey Island Sneakers

By Alec Meer on March 20th, 2009 at 5:26 pm.

File under ‘so pointless it’s brilliant’. Via Ron Gilbert (one of the minds behind Monkey Island, and currently working on DeathSpank), one enterprising Spanish LucasArts fan’s DIY The Secret of Monkey Island Converse trainers:

One of a kind, baby. That image of the old guy by the campfire, from MI’s first scene, always throws me back about 15 years whenever I see it. Aw.

But could I, in good conscience, wear these? I suspect not, but I would gladly hang them from a nail on the back of my door. I’m kerrrrrrayyyyzeeee like that.

  1. Pags says:

Great title! Not so sure on the shoes though. I grew out of Converse when I was 13.

  2. Larington says:

I could just imagine Will Smith ordering a pair in a marketting travesty…

    …I mean FILM.
    Film…. Filmmm. I think.

  3. Joe says:

    WANT!

Reminds me; I need new shoes too.

  4. Kast says:

I’d take a hoody with thoes images on front and back, or maybe that lovely box art.

  5. Gap Gen says:

Are they still breathable underwater after ten minutes, though?

  6. Gap Gen says:

    That was tenuous. Sorry.

  7. Markoff Chaney says:

    Nice!

  8. Jarmo says:

It’s great how the texture of the fabric makes the images look like the dithered low res graphics of the era.

  9. Taillefer says:

    Made from real leather?
    How appropriate…

  10. Rei Onryou says:

    DO WANT!

I’ve never been a Converse person, but I’d wear these. Probably only once though. I wouldn’t want them getting damaged or dirty. They need a display case, or some sort of protective covering.

    More old school game merchandise!

  11. Ian says:

I wouldn’t wear them (for fear of ruining them) or Converse in general, but they’d be awesome to display in some fashion.

  12. Xercies says:

Me want. Ah Monkey Island, one of the best point and click games ever made.

    How i miss those days.

  13. Stupoider says:

    Those are lovely.

  14. EGTF says:

“You have the shoes of a dairy farmer!”
“How appropiate. You dress like a cow”

  15. NotDanShoe says:

Very nice work on the shoes.

I stopped supporting Converse when they got bought out by Nike. Something about walking around on shoes made by some kids in a sweatshop in Cambodia takes the punk vibe out of it.

  16. Optimaximal says:

Now if only woot.com did shoes!

  17. BooleanBob says:

I see kotaku finally changed their colour scheme?

  18. Oak says:

    Ouch.

  19. not the rob with a pony says:

Haha BooleanBob really laying down the burns there! RPS are going to be reeling from that one! May as well give up now chaps there is no recovery from such a decisive put down.

    RPS: 1873 – BooleanBob’s comment.

  20. Lukasz says:

who i have to kill to get my hands on them?

  21. Tomte says:

    Want!

  22. Xercies says:

    @NotDanShoe

I guess you go bare foot since nearly all trainers either Nike or not are made by people in Sweat Shops.

  23. unwesen says:

Awesome shoes! The only thing that’d made them better is if the fight was against the swordmaster :)

  24. Saul says:

@NotDanShoe: Obviously what we need is Monkey Island blackspot sneakers.

In any case, though, they’re pretty cool.

  25. AoE says:

    @Taillefer,

Chucks are canvas, there’s no leather real or fake involved in these shoes.

  26. Crane says:

    @Xercies

Or he could, I don’t know… wear shoes that AREN’T trainers?

  27. drewski says:

Shoes, in general, regardless of style or label, are generally made in Asian sweatshops.

I’ve never understood why not wearing an item of clothing has to be a big dick waving event.

  28. Taillefer says:

    @AoE
    They’re leather in my joke.

  29. Sunjammer says:

I kind of remember MI not so much because of how awesome it was to play (though it was), but because of how effortlessly likable the game was all the way through.

That game has a heart of pure gold, and i wish i could find out where it lives so i can send it flowers.

  30. Maya says:

Hi! I’m the girl who painted those shoes ^^ I am amazed at the success they’re gaining since Ron Gilbert posted them.
I’m really glad you like them, thanks for the kind words! :D

  31. Alex May says:

You painted them? I was going to ask how they were done. That must have taken ages.

  32. Alex May says:

Wow I didn’t check the post dates at all there.

  33. Brittany says:

Are these ever going to be available for purchase? My fiance proposed to me using the Monkey Island game, and those shoes would be a perfect gift for him to wear on our wedding day.

  34. Giri says:

I would love to have those shoes! As Brittany asked… Will they ever be up for sale?? =D

Nice work on the shoes… Man, I miss that game.

  35. Suter says:

    Are those LeChuck Taylor all-stars?

I want to hear more about this Monkey Island proposal you speak of Britt-a-ny.

  36. Helen says:

I WANT them, I want them NOW :)

  37. h says:

I dunno, I’d probably wear them once and then lechuck them.
