Well, that’s what the trailer should have been titled. Actually it’s more about the goofy occult horror angle of the reworked shooter, showing off the reality-hopping “veil” effects and the green-emitting monsters that Nazi scientists have created to destroy Freedom, jazz and apple pie. There are also impossibly large guns. That’s right: it’s Wolfenstein, it’s coming this summer, and it’s a first-person shooter videogame. We like those.
You’ll always be the subject of our occult experiments, GameTrailers. Love you!

The vid’s broken, but I’ve read PCZone’s article on the game and it’s safe too say I can be coloured unimpressed (or green, I dunno).
Medal of Honour: Airbourne did the WW2 free-form game play a while back and Soul Reaver beat them to the dimension hoping 10 years ago.
21/03/2009 at 12:16 Senethro says:
I think it looks good but am more interested in the multiplayer. The Wolfenstein “community” apparently has already decided that this game will fail because the MP is not a carbon copy of RTCW/W:ET. But then they’re a small, noisy echo-chamber that hates everything. I wonder how they’ll react when they hear that the MP part of the game is made on the Great Satan, the ETQW engine.

I like it. This smell like a very good FPS. And a very good FPS is like having a good wine, a pipe, and a blond. What more a men can ask to life?.
Also, It smell like this one will have some powerfull feel weapons. I absolutelly want more sniper autoguns, ligthing rays gun, and other pseudo-WW superweapons.

Was that the BFG in there? Hmm looks old school.
21/03/2009 at 12:40 ShiroGamer says:
its looking good
coulda been better i suppose
but did u guys notice that there was no PC logo at the end of the trailer ?
21/03/2009 at 12:45 Mil says:
If they are going to combine the two biggest FPS setting clichés (namely horror and WWII), I hope they don’t make the game too serious. That would be a real turn-off.

Oh well, i think no one said they are making a revolution in gaming. But i think it can be a good game, if they implement all this well.

Coool.
21/03/2009 at 13:03 derFeef says:
It looks medicore tbh – a freaky Call of Duty.
I also dont understand why they put in the same feature as in singularity (alternate reality).
21/03/2009 at 13:06 Heliocentric says:
@Tei
Blonde, srsly? The whole game sounds like arse and style of hype its trying to build means they intend to ride that harder than critical acclaim. I’ll try a demo of course, but otherwise? GTFO

Good grief – this was like a montage of clips from 15 different games from the last 15 years. I hope the dimension hopping adds a lot, because the rest of it has been recycled too – many – times…
21/03/2009 at 13:38 derFeef says:
I just watched the singularity trailer again. And its almost the same like this. LOL why dont they just make one good game?! Nooo, instead they make 2 medicore games.
21/03/2009 at 13:39 Serenegoose says:
looked kinda fun to be honest, but nothing that’s going to rock my world. seems that’s the way id have tended since RTCW. appropriate really. I might pick it up when it drops down in price, it doesn’t look worth a £30-35 entry fee. (though the thought of paying £35 for any videogame that doesn’t come with a godsdamn map is absurd.)
21/03/2009 at 14:00 MetalCircus says:
Well, PC elitism aside, IT LOOKS FUN! Remember what that is? Anyway, I hope it’s as utterly silly as RTCW, with fire breathing nazi zombies n’ all.

I’m with Theobans. Zeppelins => automatic buy.
Apart from that, some of the locations looked pretty sweet. I for one appreciate that it’s not all concrete bunkers and mud.
I can just about live with Yet Another WW2 game as long as they promise to actually give me more interesting settings than sand, mud, shot-up buildings and big bunkers. Based on the trailer alone, this could easily beat Call of Duty for that single reason. Of course, once we include the actual gameplay, things may change, but judging gameplay from video trailers is usually not a good idea, so let’s wait and see. Visually, it looks appeaking. That’s a good start, at least.

I love it how a Nazi summons a Simon Says from the ground.
21/03/2009 at 14:55 Idle Threats & Bad Poetry says:
The only thing I thought was interesting was the gun that turns Nazis to ash before they fly apart. It reminded me of Sarah Conner’s nightmare in Terminator 2.
Apart from that, there was nothing exciting or remarkable about the video. The howling skull at the end of the video was especially disappointing. It had me thinking, “Is that the best monster you’ve got?”
Trailers are supposed to get the gamers excited, but the trailer didn’t even give me a feel for why I was supposed to want to change dimensions anyhow.
@Optimaximal: The pre-rendered, cinematic trailer for Turning Point was awesome and exciting. I didn’t hear much about the game after it was released, so I’ll assume it wasn’t that great.

21/03/2009 at 16:00 Tei says:
@Helio: Is my opinion, and I could be wrong, and this become a stupid linear game with quick time events. But I think there could be some good map design, some good weapons design.. and on the bone and metal, that is a FPS, a good set of maps and weapons to shot things. Again, I could be wrong.
21/03/2009 at 16:17 SirKicksalot says:
Tei, it’s a semi-open-world game (think Stalker) with upgrades and money and missons and stuff.
21/03/2009 at 16:26 PaulMorel says:
So bad it’s good.
21/03/2009 at 16:36 Post Maker says:
I’ll side with Roflgoat in that seeing a white Morpheus summon up that otherwordly Simon Says is a highlight of the trailer. It even requires angry evil metal claws just to hold it in place! Imagine the power you could unleash by getting all the button presses correct!
That being said, the game looks like what I’d expect from an occult-themed World War II FPS; silly, stupid, over-the-top and fun. Big guns, nonsense plot, ridiculous premise, the works. It’s okay for a game to be dumb, you guys!
Did anyone else catch the monster committing suicide? It hapens right after the “gun that turns people to ash, but still lets them scream” section. He just pounds his little fist on a generator or a gas tank of some sort and everything blows up.

Why does the user think id is making this game? It seems that Raven is doing most of the work while id is just supervising the use of its IP.
21/03/2009 at 18:34 Turin Turambar says:
This game doesn’t seem to have a good reception between gamers. Things i have read on the net:
-”It’s too much like CoD clone but with supernatural stuff and bullet time. Bleh, unoriginal.”
-”Too much supernatural, in the previous RTCW wasn’t so overwhelming. Also they are copying CoD with ironsight and melee attack and all that!”
-Outdated engine, why are they bothering to release this old crap!
So: it’s too diferent, it’s not enough different, it’s too liner, it’s not enough linear, etc etc. And it doesn’t have super graphics so whatever, it’s not AAA.

Kinda funny, and a little sad, that Raven’s releasing two TOTALLY DIFFERENT shooters in the near future – one with magical abilities allowing you to travel into the Veil, and the other with technological abilities allowing you to travel into the past.
21/03/2009 at 21:59 Pags says:
True. You could always play someone else from Spectrum though! Flight sim mode for the Angels, RTS for Colonel White, FPS for Captain Blue, or just an adventure game for Captain Scarlet?
21/03/2009 at 22:08 Heliocentric says:
I remember being annoyed for trying to sell 2 public stealth games (ass creed and conviction) announced to be within a year of each other. I still hold that captain scarlet being invincible was a stupid concept for a hero, as it made nothing he did heroic. So, he wins while never being in harms way, or loses despite never being threatened. A thunder birds game focused on actual rescues rather than combating terrorists would be great. “oil tanker on fire, save crew and limit oceanic damage. Ps you cant use thunder bird 2 or 5 for arbitry reasons.
21/03/2009 at 22:08 clive dunn says:

maybe Raven is doing a marketing experiment trying to find out of slapping a new fresh name onto a game will make more money than slapping a stale overused franchise name on the exact same thing ?
on the bright side, if Singularity does better than wolfestein maybe theyll stop with the attack-of-the-sequels approach to produce new games

The vid got me excited at the beginning when I imagined you play as a Nazi mad scientist with thousands of henchmen at your fingertips. You set them up so as to delay BJ long enough to make a last minute exit each level. The last level you finish your work to gain super powers just in time to fight BJ one on one!
22/03/2009 at 00:39 BJ Blazkowicz says:
THIS GAME MAKES ME PROUD TO HAVE BEEN USING THIS NAME IN EVERY GAME SINCE RTCW.
22/03/2009 at 05:37 flo says:
mmmh, for some reason I think playing as the mad nazi scientist talking at the beginning would be much more fun than as lone american hero guy or whatever the guy you play is supposed to be.
22/03/2009 at 07:01 yns88 says:
Honestly, RTCW wasn’t all that great. It’s really just ET that kept the game alive, and if a game just like RTCW came out now those people would probably hate it just as much.
That said, I don’t have my hopes high for a number of reasons:
1. It somehow manages to look worse than DOOM 3 in screenshots despite being 5 years newer (I think the culprit is that id tech 4 only really shines when it comes to lighting and shadows (lol pun i r clever), and those are underplayed in the Wolfy screens and videos I’ve seen).
2. The gameplay seems just like all the other generic shooters we forget about.
3. The plot seems to take itself a little too seriously, and the character models and animations look clumsy even in the trailers. Really, we just want gratuitous nazi guts spilled on the floor and crazy monsters and ubermen to battle from the depths of the scientists’ labs. If there’s one thing they pick up from id, I hope it’s the notion to keep things simple.

I don’t understand why everyone is so down on this. It looks like it’s continuing on with the same old over the top fun nonsense that Wolfstein series has run with since the start. I don’t get this expectation that some people have, that all new games must constantly be pushing the boundries of what’s possible in computer graphics.
