Based on Eve chronicle The Breakout, this epic piece of fan film by Eve player Dire Lauthris tells the story of the early years of Eve’s faction warfare. Mr Lauthris explains the background to his work here on the Eve forums, including noting some mistakes in the narration. He’s been working on it since 2007. You should go watch, below. Thanks to Spiffeh for the link.

Man I wish Eve fleet combat was actually like that.
That.
Was.
Awesome.
Videos like this make me wish that you could use a joystick to control your ship in space….
The narration is horrid, but the quality of it is excellent and it’s very, very well put together.
Yes, I agree with Schmung. And Jon too – would be awesome to pilot smaller ships (frigates or maby even fighters in the future?) using a joystick to have sort of dogfights and stuff :) But I guess it would be quite a strain on the server though. Imagine 200+ players using it in fleet warfare… Awesome for sure, but even more laggy?
Did anyone watch it and name all the ships/drones?
It could have done with a bit more variety than just Dominix, Condor and Kestrel. Although seeing the Hammerheads flying in formation was cool.
Jon: the idea was that they are all early ships that were around in the original conflict.
The variety of ships is representative of those in use 200 years prior to the events of the game (The Gallente/Caldari war actually saw the invention of Fighters and Frigates by the Caldari specifically to counter the Battleships that dominated the Gallente navy of the Time. This pre-dates the Megathron by at least a hundred years I think and the only Caldari BS this old is the Scorpion. However even the Scorpion wasn’t in heavy use during the war).
The Hookbill was also prominent as this is the oldest Frigate design and the fore-runner to the Merlin.
I didn’t watch it for my own health and the health of my wallet. I quit EVE cold turkey a few months ago when it became clear that I needed that money for other things, but I am weak. I’ve had force myself to ignore the recent abundant RPS coverage of EVE because I know that if I read Rossignol’s loving descriptions of Apocrypha my resolve will collapse faster than a poorly thought out shield tank.
i dont think CCP’s videos are half as good as that, frankly that was fucking AWSOME.
Nice video. It was somewhat unconfortable to see a Gallente ship behind bombed (our people was dyiing here!). I have not piloted enough to recognize the enemy empire. Amarr? These amarrians have a problem, dude.
I’d second that the writing is a little spotty, but the visual and audio quality is good.
Tei: Caldari (a Chimera carrier and a few Condors)
eve is the best spreadsheet game ever
Dr Willy@ All the coverage and the fascinating Goons Vs BoB wars, combined with my previous fascination of the game made me join. Problem is that I already play WoW and War…
Help!
Eve was great at the start when it was slightly chaotic but that soon faded.
Jesus. That was so awesome.
Seriously…
I mean….. SERIOUSLY , that’s impressive. Thanks for the info Jim. I’d have missed this otherwise.
Anyone else think there’s a good chance this guy might find himself employed soonish?
This just makes me want Jumpgate: Evolution not to be rubbish even more than I already did.
Please don’t be rubbish. We need a good space-shooty-MMO. :(
The video is awesome (I downloaded it off the EVE site last night) but he did get some help on this project. He visited CCP in iceland and received a stripped down version of their video-making tool for his personal use. That’s what allowed him to make some of those shots a reality, they’d be impossible to do on SiSi or Tranquility.
Man, EVE will be like 100x times better if CCP put a video player inside EVE to watch this video. Dawng!
To CCP: Release the tools!
To Dire: Epic Props
To EVE Players: We are the elite among players of MMO’s. This is the game you will tell your grandchildren that you played when they ask “What did you do during the MMO wars of 2014?”
To those that played but do so no longer: You have been tested and found wanting.
To those that haven’t played yet: Go! What on earth are you waiting for? You can’t knock it till you’ve tried it (for a few months).
To those that play WoW and nothing else: STFU N00bs :P
That is all, carry on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3OIcogDi5M& Another great EVE video.
That that was one of the Chronicals though made into a vid is quite awesome. I hope some fans (with abilility unlike I) turn some more of the Chronicals into vids.
Mebbe http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=11-02-05 :D
Finally arrived to my home under the bridge to watch this. I will just say: Holy shit!
But what a spreadsheet!
As a non-Eve player I’m not entirely sure what that was all about, or even what was happening within the video itself. It seemed like a lot of very pretty but rather unconnected in-game shots without much in the way of continuity.
Still, Eve does have a very pretty engine.
The old adage is still true.. Eve is far more fun to watch and discuss then actually play.
Eve is fun to play too, but you need a guiding hand who introduce you to PVP. I’m having a blast helping to keep Gallente space from Caldari militia. The combat is much more tactic intensive compared with other MMOs.
That is very nice! :D
I know nothing about EVE and this made me shiver at it’s epicness.
There are so many amazing fan videos to come out of EVE that I have watched. It’s just built for making movies!
I like that it says that the Gallente war machine grinded into gear.
Nicely done but I kept substituting the names while I was listening; like “The Galactica jumped away from Babylon 5 as the N’arn attack got under way” etc etc. Maybe it’s the BSG themed vids posted after that weren’t helping there.
A while ago someone made a rather cool little vid made of in-game footage and voice chat. Not much to it but, as a non Eve-er particularly, it had a unique vibe most of them don’t.
… And yet, in Eve, the fictional history has less heroism and betrayal than the everyday lives of its player characters.
I have zero interest in Eve (actually, I have zero interest in playing Eve. I find it an exceedingly interesting thing to look at and think/read about) but that video is stunningly well made.
@Muzman
Sounds interesting, any chance you can dig up a link?
I had a bit of a look around, but nothing leapt out at me unfortunately.
It was ages ago and named for some particular clan that’s no doubt been obliterated by the Goonswarm by now. Maybe someone passing will remember it.
No worries, thanks for trying :)
‘Grinded’
Hmmm. I like the Winona Ryder soundalike narrator, but some paused were out of place, otherwise very professional. Fantastic start to it! But yeh, space battles are all very samey after a while unless characters (at least character ships) are involved. See Star Wars for how to do them a little better.
Great effort nonetheless… is this all done in game or can EVE be set up for Machinima quite easily?
I made an EVE vid a couple of years ago, it’s not quite as good as the one up top though ;)

Yea, that video was mega.

Most people are probably familiar with this one, but it’s still a favourite for me because of the big zappy guns. Ignore the first 2 minutes of ‘text’… the camera work and chosen score that follow are both rather spiffy.
All I have to say is; fucking Gallente scum.
Videos of EVE like this one always make the game look awesome. However, the actual videos I’ve watched of people playing EVE make it look so utterly boring. They all seem to play zoomed way the hell out with no interest in what the ship to ship combat looks like at all.
Awsomeness^n
EVE plays like a strategy game. There’s actually a LOT of decision making during and before combat, far more than in any other MMO I’ve played, you just can’t see all the whirring going on through a player’s head. It’s subtle and rewards teamplay, smart thinking, and good planning.
EVE is a good game. Shame its hands off for players that not looking for player killing, griefing and scamming.
Missions, production, invention, trade – all non griefing or killing activities that Eve supports in droves. There are far more Empire-based non-combatants in Eve than there are PvPers and griefers.
