Based on Eve chronicle The Breakout, this epic piece of fan film by Eve player Dire Lauthris tells the story of the early years of Eve’s faction warfare. Mr Lauthris explains the background to his work here on the Eve forums, including noting some mistakes in the narration. He’s been working on it since 2007. You should go watch, below. Thanks to Spiffeh for the link.

Small gang PvP can give you more of a feeling of ship to ship combat than these videos of big fleet battles show. Zooming the camera all the way out is really for strategic purposes: fleet battles are often fought over 200km+ ranges, and you need to be able to see all the ships that you are engaging.

However, it’s not the graphics and visual effects that makes Eve what it is, not by a long shot. If you want pretty spaceships first and foremost, this probably isn’t the right game. What makes the PvP good is something that can’t really be explained in a 3 minute video (as touched on by Calistas): team play, tactics, planning and good communication. For me, being in a Corp of like-minded players is pretty much key to how much fun you can get out of the game.

Some of the most memorable moments are when plans go slightly awry, like my (highly experienced) Corp mate managing to accidentally lock on to a (jump) gate due to a lag spike, and getting his ship popped by the automatic gate guns before he’d even fired a shot at the enemy. He was after all, there to show us less experienced members ‘exactly how it’s done’. I nearly wet myself.

When the PvP is good, it’s untouchable. Adrenaline central. And when it all goes wrong, it has gone wrong because you and your gang mates made an arse of it one way or another. Either way (and most importantly), it’s usually a right good laugh.
