Maximum Respect For Tom Clancy

By Alec Meer on April 7th, 2009 at 12:00 pm.

As revealed by an accidental nose at Steam’s folder structure. Could be anyone’s fault really, but giggles are go nonetheless.

Do developers ship files off to a publisher for the final wrapper/install? Might not be their fault if it’s just a typo in the install shield thingy.

  3. I wonder if it was Valve or Ubisoft who dropped the ball there. It really could have been either.

    I wouldn’t worry, I strongly suspect Tom Clancy doesn’t exist. He’s just a marketing by-word for high-tension, near-future, pseudo-realistic, warfare.

I bet even the books are written by committee and simply published under his name.

Whoever’s mistake it was, I’m glad to see Steam finally acknowledge that the net is all about the sacrifice of traditionalpl [typmo] language for speed, lol, imho, idkwita.*

I guess you have to follow an insightful and interesting interview post with a post about someone making a typo, don’t want people thinking you’re proper journalists.

  19. Grandstone says:

Interesting story that does nothing to illuminate Tom Clancy’s character beyond that which his books provide:

Tom Clancy spoke to American soldiers as part of a program to get them to write about their experiences. Unlike the other authors involved, whose names I’ve since forgotten, he said that the only reason to write was to make money.

  20. 357SIG says:

    @PC Monster
Actually, Tom Clancy has nothing to do with books or video games published in his name anymore. The last few “Clancy” books were actually written by Ubisoft writers, no joke.

  23. Andy`` says:

I think the title typo is a fault on Ubisoft’s side somewhere, something someone should have noticed before release. But maybe it’s intentional branding, to go with Tom Clany’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/objects/142/14234189.html
    or Tom Clany’s EndWar: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/industry/2008/10/16/tom-clany-s-endwar-public-demo-released-today/1

  24. Kompi says:

Hee hee. Funny catch. Provided a few laughs here.

Not sure where exactly blame can be placed – my own non-steam copy spells the folder properly (it even goes full way with typing it down as H.A.W.X, while most places eshew the dots on account to them being a royal pain in the afterburner.

  25. Wulf says:

The missing c was worth a grin, but it’s still not the typo I’ve been hoping for since the start of the game, now had it been “tom clnacy’s hawt”, then I would’ve had a good laugh.

It seems everyone’s avoiding that typo though, with grave urgency too. Perhaps these game journalists, developers, and so on can subconsciously sense that there are people like myself out there just waiting to call “Kinky!” on them the moment they make such a typo.

    A shame.
