I’m still a bit pessimistic about Will leaving Maxis, and I keep having this sinking feeling that this company will totally fail, but then I always remind myself, “with Will Wright running it? Not a chance.” I am also not too sure about the whole “robots” project.

All I’ve learned from this Article is that they could have merely named the think tank “Will Wright is god” and people would still buy into it.

Also I’m one of those who thinks that Will Wright is now going to be marginalized even more than ever. He will no longer have any say, at all, on the realization of his ideas. Wonderful ideas will be trademarked and locked away in a drawer to pin down competitors, while schlocky garbage is spewed out in a tidal wave of filth.

It’s easy to pick on Spore because it’s just the latest example of how EA still doesn’t get it.

The Sims was an amazing success because it was so unlike what came before, it appealed to hardcore gamers and whole new markets all at once. It’s been downhill from there, with every other interesting idea either scrapped for possible expansions (many of which never come).

Do you really think a game where you spend 10% of your time taking a crap would’ve passed a cost-benefit analysis?

And there were limitations in Spore that had nothing to do with creativity. How come the only way you can have mandibles is if you’re a carnivore? How come you can’t walk around on a planet from your UFO and interact with tribes and civs like in the GDC ’04 vid? Oh yeah, because that’s going to be in an expansion pack eventually.

But I’ll leave it at that, I think being an angry internet man about Spore 100 times this year alone is enough.

I wouldn’t put him in the same league as Molyneux or whatever his name is, I’d put him in league with say Lord British. He made great games in the past but his most recent attempts aren’t so great (But not THAT Bad either) I think a lot of it is that people expect to much from them based only on his past offerings. Even a fantastic base ball player doesn’t hit a home run EVERY time he’s at bat and he is still capalbe of hitting a foul ball every now and again too.

Because Wright only made Spore and no other game so lets forget all his other games which didn’t get hyped but still exceeded expectations amirite?!?!

Will Wright is great, and the guy is an excellent speaker.

But when it comes to actually producing a game that lives up to all the hype, he falls in the same sorry league as Molyneux.

What they need to do is give Will Wright a REAL tank instead of a think tank and see what happens then.

Or at least put the HQ for the new think tank in a volcano and give him a pool with sharks with laser beams on their heads.
