RPS Rule #234: Silly Name=Linkage

By Kieron Gillen on April 15th, 2009 at 10:16 am.

Let’s start the day with a little webgame shootage, eh? The Mysterious Mr Macgregor pointed me in the direction of – deep breath - Robot Dinosaurs That Shoot Beams When They Roar. In it, you play a robot dinosaur who shoots a beam when they roar. Roar longer, beam gets weaker. Roar in short bursts, sounds very silly. Either way, it enlivens a basic yet charming left-right scrolling shooter. Also, a choice of two dinosaurs: Tyrannosaurus X or Dinomite. They shoot beams when they roar.

I love this kind of energy management system.

  2. Ian says:

Rule #234 is the best of the rules.

A pity it’s so easy, mind.

  3. DigitalSignalX says:

    No exceptions.

  4. Jochen Scheisse says:

I played it before, it’s not a very good shooter. It just has a very good name and background. Man, cyber’d up dinosaurs, that takes me back to early 90s TV comic series goodness.

  5. FunkyB says:

“…it’s not a very good shooter”

    But…but…ROOOAARRR!

  6. Ian says:

@ Jochen Scheisse: I think you forgot how they shoot beams when they roar!

  7. espy says:

Jochen! They shoot beams! When they ROAR! :D

All they need now is a grappling hook and a rope.

  8. Fringe says:

    Me Grimlock, Badass!

  9. Idle Threats & Bad Poetry says:

It doesn’t need to be difficult. It needs to be awesome, and that it is, my dear lad.

    ROOOOAAAAOooooAAR!

  10. DarthInsinuate says:

    Yay! That was cool.

Not because it was a good game, in fact is quite mediocre, but the Saturday morning cartoon theme is so wonderfully realised it’s a complete win.

    MWRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAGH!

  11. skalpadda says:

    MWROOOOOOAAAAaaAAaAAARGH!

Yeah, definitely 10 minutes of fun, was laughing through the whole thing :)

  12. Optimaximal says:

So it’s basically R-Type with robosaurs? That game pioneered efficient energy management in a time when jumping on the heads of walking mushrooms was deemed the epitomy of computer gaming.

  13. Psychopomp says:

    RRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRB

  14. MeestaNob! says:

    Game of the Year.

  15. Ben Abraham says:

Is this the new “You have to burn the rope”? It’s certainly from the same school of ultra-descriptive naming convention…

  16. Zanthox says:

Podcastle/NegGamer’s Wardrox referenced this so I can feel cool and ahead of the times for once…. ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!

  17. Lambo says:

We humans really must be DINO-TASTIC! if one of us could make something this awesome.

Played this a bit back, I think on reccomendation from Tom Francis.

It is truly a work of art.

  21. Lim-Dul says:

Hey – this game is very short but also quite fun – I wouldn’t have thought.
And you know the central gameplay mechanic that robot dinosaurs shoot beams when they roar took me completely by surprise! ;-)

  22. Rei Onryou says:

This game is so awesome, I think it made me shit my pants.

  23. Z says:

Make sure you let it sit and run for a bit after you beat it. The audio is awesome.

  24. Tomski says:

I think thats the only Shmup I’ve ever finished!
