Today is competition day on RPS. For the first time since it was released in 2003 the brilliant space-faring MMO Eve Online has a retail box, and to celebrate that CCP have sent us six copies to give away. Somewhat unusually for RPS competitions there is no region-constraint on any of our prizes today, so anyone may enter. If you want to find out how to win Eve Online then click onwards.
The retail version of Eve Online includes 60-days gametime, a special faction shuttle in-game, and lots of other stuff that accelerates the newbie experience in the game world. It’s a rather splendid bundle, even for jaded old pilots like me.
To win you need to email us via this link with the answer to this question: What is the best science fiction film, and why? The six most accurate or entertaining answers to this question, as judged by an RPS editor, will receive the prize. The closing date is midnight on the 26th of April.
Remember that we’ll need your postal address with your entry, and entry to the compo means agreeing to our terms and conditions. If you’re not happy sending us a postal address then don’t enter!
And here’s the most recent Eve trailer, just for good measure.

Erm… A competition where you are expected to give your credit card details after winning? Wheee!
Nope. You don’t need to enter credit card details for 60-days included with the box: the game time comes as a code you enter on the E-O website.
Helio, using a creditcard to pay for an EVE subscription is entirely optional.
I’ve been paying my characters timecodes with Paypal for 2 years, no issues at all.
And as Jim says, the code that’s included in the box can be used to create an account or add 60 days of gametime to an existing account.
You can also use the code ingame and convert it into 2 PLEX items, which can be sold ingame for Isk.
Can anyone enter or just UK residents?
MacQ did you actually read anything other than the headline?
You’re about a month late to announce that the box is out. :P
Anyway, since this competition is *NOT* limited to a region for a change I might even participate. o/
edit/PS: You might’ve included some of the more significant changes in the last few patches for bitter old vets thinking about re-subbing, btw.
A bit of clarification:
The accelerated training time is available to all new characters, whether they get the box or not and also whather they are on an existing account or a newly created one.
The special edition shuttle and faction standings are only available to accounts created with the GTC in the box and will not be available to either existing accounts or trial accounts which use said GTC to extend their game time. (tbh honest the shuttle is a bit of a crock, its only got 10m3 more cargo space and is a reskin of an old model, as for the standings bonus to make factional warfare more accessible. I personally wouldn’t bother with Factional Warfare, its not worth the hassle)
This has been causing something of an uproar on the EVE-O forums and has been mishandled atrociously by CCP, with no-one seeming to know whats supposed to be going on.
Jim, don’t try to fight the endless tide of stupid! Smother those tiny voices like an unwanted kitten.
I kinda want the gametime but it would be a bit wrong of me to enter since I already have the game
Woot! Entered… Tough calls.. Blade Runner.. Solyaris… 2001..
I’m opting out of this one as well due only to the fact I can’t keep up subscription based models right now. I’d hate to get 2 months of great joy in and have to put it away. I’d rather get someone else hooked instead. I feel like I should enter since most of these competitions are for y’all on the isle, but it just wouldn’t feel right to take from another…
Seriously though. It’s 2001. Best movie ever made. It just happens to be a Sci-Fi movie. I’d go into more detail but that would be telling…
Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but EVE actually did have a retail box when it was first launched. Granted, they didn’t sell many, but I have one at home :)
OMG, words are meant to be read!
klumhru: Yes, it had a retail box when it originally launched. Hence the words “for the first time since”, which implies it did have a box when it was launched. ie: it stopped having a boxed version in the interim.
Is it brain-death day in RPS comments?
Zegl: Yes, I might have. But I didn’t, as that would be an entirely different post.
Ynnnuurrggh-dduuuuurggghhnnn. Braaaaiiiinnns.
i entered the comp. i really could use a free 60 day time code also i hope you deliver to australia mates i just hope my Kangaroo doesn’t breakdown again :(
@Markof: Yeah, 2001 was the first thing I thought of for that exact reason. I guess I won’t be winning anything for something that obvious.
@RPS: No big deal, but you don’t really need to completely own what we write, do you? Don’t you just need a perpetual permission to distribute the information? Again, no big deal; Looking through the comments, I am now afraid that Jim will yell at me with his scary megaphone.
On a tangent, with it being so long since the original release, and this boxed launch being something of a milestone, I wonder whether any of the major magazines/sites will re-review the game. When it first came out, it was buggy as fuck and confusing as hell, and most reviewers didn’t know what to make of it. It’s been improved massively since then, and continues to grow steadily, week upon week.
It’s not my sort of game (too slow and barren and space-simmish, rather than space-shootery), but it is not only pretty much unique in its niche, but they haven’t been resting on their laurels either. It’s a much bigger, better game than ever before.
It’d be ridiculous if places are still sticking to their unsure and often hamfisted launch-day coverage of it.
2001 is a great movie but it’s not great because it’s sci-fi
Alien has to be the greatest sci-fi movie. It set the tone for everything that came after it. It is just so well shot and lit
If someone ends up playing EVE for the first time: don’t be a carebear. EVE is the most boring game in the world if you don’t take risks, and it can be the most thrilling game in the world if you do
Sorry Jim, English = 3rd language, therefore my “Maybe I misunderstood” caveat
I’m fairly well versed in the history of the game, as CCP offices are about half a mile from where I live and I know many of the staffers / devs….
/me goes to garage to have caved-in head repaired :(
carebears suck everyone one but carebears hate them. be a barsted and pillage everyone or be a hero and pillage BoBR space
Jim Rossignol: Yes, it had a retail box when it originally launched. Hence the words “for the first time since”, which implies it did have a box when it was launched. ie: it stopped having a boxed version in the interim.
Is it brain-death day in RPS comments?
@ Jim, bit harsh don’t you think? It was a simple mistake, prefaced by the admission that he may have been mistaken, and followed by a smiley face (with no unpleasantness in between).
Anyway, I think I fall into the “it’s a fascinating game to read about, but I have no intention to actually play the thing” category. Maybe (some of) the winners could agree to keep us informed of their adventures as EVE-newbies though — that could make for an interesting guest post/forum thread.
I was about to enter this, then I realised I don’t really want to play eve =p
Does the prize include the time in your schedule, work, and social life necessary to play Eve properly?
Playing Eve “casually” is a bit like competing in the Olympics “casually”. You may enjoy doing it, but you’re going to be competing against people who have made this their life.
DMJ it’s quite possible to play EVE casually… moreso than most MMOs I think, but it’s also really easy to play it all the time
you too could win 2 free months of addictive boredom!
jump jump
Started playing 3 weeks ago, working furiously to earn the money for PLEXes (game time for in game money)….winning this would make my life much easier for now ^^
Not that i actually expect to win :D
The game is every bit as fascinating, awe inspiring and mindnumbingly huge as it was described here several times…was about time for CCP to acknowledge the importance of RPS for them :D
Perhaps I was bit unfair. I’d deleted another half-dozen moronic comments before that, which had angered me.
Jim and guys I sent you my entry twice because I got so carried away that I forgot to add my name and address etc to the first email…I rectified that with a second email from the same address.
Sorry for that.
TooNu
I second the request to vicariously live through the exploits of our contest winners. If you win, please hit up the forums with tales of valour and piracy (not that kind) upon the high waves of nanoparticles traveling through the void.
Okay I sent you my E-mail . Are you going to list the winners here or will you only know if you won when you get the box ? :P
Can I buy a win with ISK? This is an EVE compo after all, should all bit meta and dubious ;)
You probably could buy a win if any of the judges play Eve onine, other wise I dunno if they’d have any use for ISK lol. Do they let you turn ISK into real dollars like they do with second life money ?
EVE Online? Sounds rubbish. I give it a week.
I might have an short, but non-standard review heading your way shortly. After all thismvoie deserves attention.
DMJ sounds the same as any other game to be honest.
Great game, still enjoy playing it after 4 years.
Granted I don’t have as much time to devote to it as I used to but the game is so diverse that you can find a multitude of ways to keep learning or try something new.
Free upgrades and expansions from CCP is also a big plus!!
Just tried to enter this, but apparently there is no real intent by anyone involved to make it possible since there is some stone-age door blocking entry via stupid and obsolete measures (what’s your e-mail address? what address does your server use? what’s the address of your left toe? what address does your dead dog still use for his dried bones delivery? Do you know where all the lost ancient religions buried their artifacts?) How dissapointing – truly flacid folks.
i ve like eve since day one, fun game to play
Congrats on the worldwife giveaway, hope my previous pissing and moaning makes her happy.
On a side note, if someone from Nigeria wins could you ask em for their banking info and pass it along to me. kthx
@DigitalSignalX: Logan’s Run, obviously. At least that would’ve been my entry if I’d chosen to participate.
-edit- Also, good luck to all participants.
On the eve website is this –
New Rock, Paper, Shotgun Contest
Want your very own copy of the EVE Online retail box? Rock, Paper, Shotgun is giving away six copies featuring a 60 day game time card, an EVE career planner, your very own Interbus Shuttle and more. “How can I win such a fabulous prize” you ask? It’s easy! Simply go to Rockpapershotgun.com and answer this simple question: “What is the best science fiction film, and why?” Full details are available on their site and who knows, maybe that second account you always wanted can be yours!”
Nice
I would just like to say that I entered this Piracy contest and that the greatest Sci-Fi movie of all time is not a Piracy movie!
Also, as a side note, could you please ask DRM to stop eating my child…
(I do so hope I win)
Tomas: What are you talking about?
“an EVE career planner”
Surely it would just read.
Tasks:
quit job
live in mothers basement
play EVE
Where are all these basements. My house doesn’t have a basement. I wish it did. I could move the computer and my bed down there and make a den. It’d be awesome.
Jim: I think Tomas can’t find the email adres or something like that. Because of the brain issues, you see?
Zombies? Quick, get the sunflowers out to save us!
@ChaosSmurf, you might need to dig it yourself.
