The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 16

By John Walker on April 25th, 2009.

It's a logo. Naomi Klein is FURIOUS about it.

Welcome to our first ever sixteenth Electronic Wireless Programme. It’s Jim and John this week, once more gathered in John’s gloomy room to record their completely not gloomy podcast. Under our terrifying wordgaze comes Mafia II, LucasArts anecdotes, Stalker: Clear Sky modding, Zeno Clash piracy tactics, and the comments of Heather Chaplin.

Duke Nukem 3D, 3D

By Alec Meer on April 24th, 2009.

I’m forever in two minds about projects to graphically update olden games. On the one hand, shiny! On the other, snarling hand, there’s a risk of messing up or losing the originally intended aesthetic effect – you’re replacing the artists’ work with that of someone else. Case in point, the just-released update for the Duke Nukem 3D High Resolution Texture Pack. Decide whether you’d snog, marry or avoid it below.

Till Death Do Us Rend Apart: On L4D Survival Mode

By Alec Meer on April 24th, 2009.

It’s a little alarming that the game I most want to play during Britain’s sunniest month since 1209AD involves skulking in the dark in the company of several hundred super-pale people: curse you, Valve, for releasing Left 4 Dead’s new, Alamo-tastic Survival mode now. It’s been my staple gaming diet for the last couple of evenings – and it’s very much renewed my interest in a game I’d otherwise grown a leeeeeeetle tired of. Here’s why.

One Million Play Aion In China

By Jim Rossignol on April 24th, 2009.

Chinese MMO distributor Shanda have reported that one million people logged on to the Chinese-language version of NCSoft’s Aion in the first four days of play. It’s worth remembering that the Chinese model means that gamers play by the hour, so this could easily go on to become a gigantic success, or just disappear overnight – a distinct possibility when financial type sources (via GI.biz) suggest that many gamers came away from their hours of Aion with some rather negative feedback. Aion is scheduled for release in Europe and North American in the autumn. (At which time I expect we’ll have to pay by the month.)

SPUDOW! Plants Vs Zombies Trailer, Zombie Maker

By John Walker on April 24th, 2009.

Kieron's family photos. Kieron's away today. You can tell because I said that they were *his* family.

Plants Vs. Zombies is due out in only two weeks now, and we’d love to tell you all about it, but mmmmphhh mmmpphhh mmmpppphh. Every time we try someone from PopCap appears behind us and stuffs a rag in our mouths. However, be sure to be here on 5th May when we’ll have the definitive review. Why definitive? Because we’re arrogant like that. Meanwhile, there’s a brand new trailer to enjoy, and an opportunity to make your very own zombie.

All Aspect Warfare Beta Keys Giveaway

By Kieron Gillen on April 24th, 2009.

Woosh!

Update – enough names have come forward now. Don’t send any more. Keys will be sent out to those who made it early next week. Thanks, sweethearts!

Following on from our All Aspect Warfare interview, Derek Smart offered a mass of keys for the ongoing All Aspect Warfare Beta for RPS readers. Now, after the subscribers got first dibs, we take it to you, the general RPS-readership. Just drop me a line and say you’d like one. First come, first served, until we run out. Don’t alter the subject line of the mail, or you’ll disqualify yourself by annoying me. Oh – and expect the keys to be mailed to you on Sunday/Monday as I’m currently off in Poland and set this to automatically post while I’m away. For a taste, here’s a couple of older videos of the game in action, focused in on the flight segment of this multi-approach game.

Interview: Reakktor Talk Black Prophecy

By Jim Rossignol on April 24th, 2009.

Having raised a collective eyebrow at the few glimpses of space MMO Black Prophecy that have emerged over the past few months, we thought it might be time to have a quick chat with Reakktor Media’s community manager Chris Schuett. Beyond the jump Schuett discusses the real-time combat nature of the game, and claims that player starships in the game could have “millions” of possible configurations.

Battlefield 1943: Trailer, Cheap, Delayed

By Jim Rossignol on April 24th, 2009.

DICE’s forthcoming “not Heroes” Battlefield game, Battlefield 1943, will be delayed on PC until September, reportedly due to the complications of bringing it to the PC platform. Once it turns up it’ll be a downloadable game available for $15. The game will feature a simplified Battlefield 1942-style system, and revamps three of the original maps, Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. There’s a trailer for Wake Island beneath the click.

The Red Arrows: FUEL GPS Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on April 24th, 2009.

Codemasters have released another brief (and actually a little strange) clip for the open-world racer, FUEL, this time showing off the race interface. They’ve also dated it: May 29th across the world. We’re expecting to have some time with FUEL before its release, so we’ll hopefully be able to let you know a bit more about what to expect closer to release.

Peggle Inside WoW: World Collapses In On Self

By Alec Meer on April 23rd, 2009.

One massively compulsive game playable within another massively compulsive game? Why, that’s like mixing Pringles with heroin. Yes, an official (from Popcap’s end, at least) Peggle plugin has been released for World of Warcraft. Which is a) terrifying b) exciting and c) supports the viewpoint that MMOs are not merely a genre anymore – they’re a platform all of their own these days.

BioShock 2 Screenshot Gallery

By John Walker on April 23rd, 2009.

BioShock 2 fever has spread across the internets today, and we’ve made our own feverish contribution. (There’s really nowhere else to go with that – “disease”, “germs”, “snotty rags of ideas” – nothing positive comes of running with the metaphor.) There’s our speculation post after watching the game running, and there’s our interview with 2K Marin developers. Below you’ll find all eighteen of the brand new screenshots of the game, including a couple with the Big Daddy HUD in place. Click on them for fullsize versions to adorn your walls.
