Notorious Mental: Serious Sam 3 Still Going

By Jim Rossignol on May 15th, 2009 at 9:10 am.

Someone posting in a Duke Nukem thread recently asked “what are Croteam doing now?” Well the answer, according to a recent update on the studio’s website, is that they are still developing Serious Sam 3, and that we should expect a publishing deal soon. The other title they had been working on is not facing such a rosy future, however. Roman Ribaric reports: “Regarding military game we were working for some time, that development was halted some time ago by investors and publishers. We were doing a ‘work-for-hire’ development there, so after the game was put on hold, there was nothing more to do there and we moved back to our projects. Obviously, the above also means that our next title won’t be published by Gamecock, as contrary to last year’s published press release by Gamecock.” We’ll keep an eye on the Croteam site for further developments.

How about releasing all their games as 53R10U5 54M?

  4. What is the betting SS3 will have plenty of references to the Duke not showing up…

Looking forward to this one. I really enjoyed the first and second encounter. Must get SS2 at some point.

    What about Spongy Dick Muffulo?
    As a name?

Good to hear that it’s still in the works. The PC needs more co-op arcade murderfests, and I like Croteams deliberately dorky sense of humor. The OldManMurray Crate Pyramid was brilliant.

And for those who think Serious Sam 2 sucked, check out the Insamnity mod.

    http://insamnity2.danceswithkleer.com/

It pretty much fixes everything wrong with the game, and the options to amp up the speed and multiply/randomize every single enemy spawn means that you can turn it into a first-person version of Smash TV if you want. You will be DROWNING in enemies.

It also ports over all the best maps from the original Serious Sam, as a bonus.

This is good news. I love the humour in the Serious Sam games and they are all about having fun.

  9. This is like the 4th serious sam title because of second encounter. So it would be s4rio4s s4m. Thats how eidos would do it.

I still think the SS2 engine would make a great rpg engine.

    What I remember of SS1:

“Aaaaaaarrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh” as hoardes of headless, kamikaze bombers appear over the top of a sand dune, bearing down on you like hellish, exploding mosquitos.

That and the cannon that fired cannon balls the size of VW camper vans. Best. Weapon. Ever. (After the super shotgun in D2, obviously)

Please don’t call it 3eriou3 3am Forever. Please

It would be completely worth it if they got Mr Gravelly Voice to say “…Threeriouth Tham Forever.” over the title card in the trailer.

Aah, how I loved the first and second encounters. Never played SS2, but the prospect of a new one has me strangely excited as there really hasn’t been a comparable fps game (other than L4D with its hoards, but that has a very different feel to it) in a while…

I loved the first and second encounters. Brilliantly silly. and the headless kamikaze were just stupid. I just couldn’t get into the second one for some reason. i should retry with the Insamity mod, definitely!

I never played SS2, but had the gold edition of the first one which I believe included second encounter?

It was really good fun, and it was good to get to use one’s Doom circle strafing skills once more.

Let’s hope the next one does not go all Doom 3.

Gamecock? They were screwed from the beginning. Sounds like they’re onto a winnar with new publisher GameFaeces.

Sorry that was atrocious. My apologies.

  18. TeeJay says:

Long sight lines, short range weapons, not quite enough ammo, vast waves of screaming enemies, herds of *massive* beasts, doors that lock behind you plus a piss-taking, gamers in-joke sense of humour = shitting + lol-ing yourself :D

(its the most ‘Robotron: 2084′-style fps imo)

  19. MetalCircus says:

huh? I never knew there was a serious sam 2. I thought it was just first and second encounter? So is SS2 worth playing?

(loved first and second encounter btw.)

  20. Dominic White says:

SS2 was decent, but not quite as good as the first 1.5/2. With the Insamnity mod, it’s absolutely top drawer when it comes to LAN play though.

I hope they go for a little more interesting enemy behaviour and maybe some basic AI.

  22. Jahkaivah says:

Left 4 Dead’s AI director using Serious Sam’s combat mechanics.

Each level you advance brings slowly throws new enemies into the mix as you play on.

Come on Croteam, that’s what SS3 needs.

  23. Alex says:

I like the Ritual Entertainment quote at the top of the page.

  24. LionsPhil says:

“I hope they go for a little more interesting enemy behaviour and maybe some basic AI.”

If you ever had to take cover, flank, or flush people out with grenades, it wouldn’t be Serious Sam. There are plenty of games tickling those particular neurons; leave Sam to the “run at things while brandishing a minigun the size of Latvia” ones. At a co-op LAN party with speakers, you can get some really cool phase effects going. DAKKADAKKADAKKA.

Is it coincidence that the crosshairs on that screenshot are aiming at the demon’s crotch?
