And so it comes to pass, the Sniper/Spy update is live, TF2’s gone free for a weekend, and the price for keeping it has halved. Here’s what we learned. The Sniper got his Huntsman bow, then he got his Razorback shield. Things got weird, Spies started appearing, and then the Spy had two watches revealed, The Cloak And Dagger and The Dead Ringer. We then met the Spy, shortly followed by the Spy getting The Ambassador. Finally the Sniper gets a jar of piss, and somewhere along the way lots of new achievements were announced and a new Payload Race game mode. Enough? Good. Who’s next?

I think one reason a lot of people are getting any unlocks is because the server that handles it is getting mauled by the free weekend deal coming up and all the people that already have the game coming back to play it. I got kicked often and could not access my items often (Randomly) Throuh-out the night. Once that initial surge slows down maybe more people will get unlocks or they’ll tweak it so they happen more often.

They should handle it like the skill gains in UO. You can randomly get one any time but if you keep doing the same thing for X amount of time you’ll get one no matter what if you haven’t already gotten one.

So say you play 2 hours and you haven’t randomly got an unlock, well then at that time it randomly unlocks a item for you. Persoanlly I think it should be related to the class you played the most in that time peroid but who am I to say? If you do randomly get an unlock in the 2 hours anyway, then that 2 hour peroid is reset. This way you KNOW every 2 hours you’ll get a new item, and maybe sooner.

Serondal reminds me of something: Make sure the server is connected to Steam as well. Last night I came across two servers that had somehow gotten disconnected from Steam, and received no unlocks while playing on those servers.

I was connected to Steam because I could see and chat with my friends on Steam, but could not access any of my weapons through the selection screen. There was text at the bottom of the loadout screen saying “Could not connect to Steam” or something to that effect.

When I joined another server I was able to access my existing weapons, and that’s when I started receiving the messages about getting new weapons, etc.

Maybe a lot of people are complaining about not getting unlocks becaue of the above reason ? I know a got a lot of disconnects for not being connected to VAT as well which is also strange. I think it is worth taking the time to make sure you can access the tool box ect before you dedicate a few hours to trying to unlock new weapons. Just doesn’t make sense for me to play 5 hours and get nothing and someone else to get 10 things in less time :P There was something else I was going to say but totally forgot . (edit I remember now) – One other thing I was wondering about. Does the number of players on the server have any effect on if you get unlocks or not? Is there a min number of players required for the matches to count? I was playing wih 3-6 people

If I here one more person complain about not being able to “stay competitive” because they don’t have time to get weapons

I know that I am writing this months late, but you guys are pussies. Suck it up. I play once a week or so, but just deal with the whores and the achievement servers. You know what I do? I just target one whore until they rage quit the internetz just like the dude above me.
