Maybe a lot of people are complaining about not getting unlocks becaue of the above reason ? I know a got a lot of disconnects for not being connected to VAT as well which is also strange. I think it is worth taking the time to make sure you can access the tool box ect before you dedicate a few hours to trying to unlock new weapons. Just doesn't make sense for me to play 5 hours and get nothing and someone else to get 10 things in less time :P There was something else I was going to say but totally forgot . (edit I remember now) - One other thing I was wondering about. Does the number of players on the server have any effect on if you get unlocks or not? Is there a min number of players required for the matches to count? I was playing wih 3-6 people

Serondal reminds me of something: Make sure the server is connected to Steam as well. Last night I came across two servers that had somehow gotten disconnected from Steam, and received no unlocks while playing on those servers.

I was connected to Steam because I could see and chat with my friends on Steam, but could not access any of my weapons through the selection screen. There was text at the bottom of the loadout screen saying "Could not connect to Steam" or something to that effect.

When I joined another server I was able to access my existing weapons, and that's when I started receiving the messages about getting new weapons, etc.

I think one reason a lot of people are getting any unlocks is because the server that handles it is getting mauled by the free weekend deal coming up and all the people that already have the game coming back to play it. I got kicked often and could not access my items often (Randomly) Throuh-out the night. Once that initial surge slows down maybe more people will get unlocks or they'll tweak it so they happen more often.

They should handle it like the skill gains in UO. You can randomly get one any time but if you keep doing the same thing for X amount of time you'll get one no matter what if you haven't already gotten one.

So say you play 2 hours and you haven't randomly got an unlock, well then at that time it randomly unlocks a item for you. Persoanlly I think it should be related to the class you played the most in that time peroid but who am I to say? If you do randomly get an unlock in the 2 hours anyway, then that 2 hour peroid is reset. This way you KNOW every 2 hours you'll get a new item, and maybe sooner.

Walter, it's completely random. I had all the previous unlocks and received the Cloak and Dagger while playing a heavy, The Sandman and Force A Nature while playing as a pyro, Natasha and the KGB while playing as a sniper, and the Axetinguisher whie playing as a spy. Like I said, I already had all the previous unlockables, so it's totally random. I got the Sandman and FAN within 5 min of each other, and the other stuff about 1 hour apart. Each time I received a little notice in the lower left of the screen letting me know what I had received, and I wasn't doing anything other than just goofing off.

@DF7

I have over 400 hours as well, and I am complaining.

I like the content of the updates, I just don't like that there is no way to EARN them. If the drops really ARE random, then, although most people will get what they are looking for, there will be a small percentage of players who never get what they want. And a slightly larger percentage will have to wait a very long time to get the drop they want.

So yeah, this system really screws the hardcore players.

I think this may be tied into how much you already have unlocked.

I have all the other unlocks and I'm not getting any of the new ones. New players seem to be getting quite a few.

There are all sorts of ways this could be more enjoyable:

-- the old system, flawed as it was.

-- if you only unlocked items you didn't already have.

-- if you only unlocked items for the class you were playing at the time.

-- if the chances of going several hours with no unlocking were very low.

-- if it were in some way influenced by achievements, kills, captures, points, or team wins.

-- if, when you gain an unlock, it was just a token you could cash in for the upgrade of your choice.

And yes, Serondal, we are impatient. Valve just spent a solid week getting us all excited and fired up about the new stuff.

I do, in some ways, actually like the fact that we actually can play the game as it's meant to be played, instead of farming achievements. But overall I think I'd rather spend a few hours farming achievements than not knowing whether I will ever get to use the Huntsman or Cloak & Dagger.

I still love that cartoon where there is a sign that says "silly hats only" Then the guy walks up with the normal hat and they call club him to death , classic.

My longest life is 24 minutes as an engineer O.o That must have been a boring match.

These complaints about the random unlock system is insane. It has no effect on the game play what so ever, you're just inpatient. The point of the game is to play the game, not get unlocks. I like the new system I'm guessing they're going to keep it. It takes the focus on achivements and more on playing the actual game.
