Holy mother of all shit, that "focus mode high on a ledge while standing still" thing is completely stolen from the blueprint in my mind for The Game I'd Like To Make. Seriously. Wow.
At least mine has a few extra features.

I simply meant "Hey, Prey's a bit of a vertical shooter, what?"

Get into a lift before they arrive and their disembodied voice will talk to you on the ride, before they materialise at the exit.

This reminded me of one of the unintentionally most funny things I've seen in a game: Creepy Watson. In the original Sherlock Holmes game Watson would follow you around. Except that the developers didn't have enough time to implement pathfinding for him. He never actually moved. So, instead, he simply appeared behind you whenever you turned around.

However, if you walked away backwards from Watson he had to stay put. He couldn't just disappear. If you then quickly whipped around 180 degrees he would suddenly appear right in front of you! He was like a ninja! As soon as you turned you back he would sneak up on you! I assumed he was holding a knife at my back like the Spy, but then slyly hid it when I turned. I nearly fell off my chair the first time he did it. It doesn't help that he had the cold steelly eyes of a murderer.

On topic: I don't find the two-button combo for shooting all that awful, except for the animation slowing things down. You had to do this in Dead Space. When I read the instructions for Dead Space I guffawed at having to use two buttons to shoot. Then I realized that I use two buttons to shoot in most games since I use "iron sites" so much. I found the lack of "aiming down the barrel" in Half-life 2 to be disorienting.

Having purchased this game on steam and played through the story and multiplayer modes, I agree with most of what the reviewer said. I had been waiting for this game for a while and I have to admit that I was dissapointed by its quality. Animations are not fluid, overall graphics are just ok (but not on par with other (better) current generation games). Shooter aspect of the game could be better too... but its acceptable. Story is not very interesting (so far, ive not finished it yet). Overall game is unpolished, and it doesnt live up to the hype... BUT
with all that said... I want to mention some good things that the game has going for it: the platforming aspect of it is fun (diving through windows, making huge jumps, sliding on a rope from one building to the another, being able to grab onto almost any ledge etc).. scale: maps have a decent size (vertically and horizontally).. and combined with the platforming and the shooting makes for fun gameplay. "Spirit vision" actually comes in handy due to the size of the maps cuz players could be so far apart in a map. Multiplayer: The previous positive aspects apply actually to the multiplayer portion of the game.. which I believe is where the substance of this game was meant to be. Bringing platforming action and shooting into a multiplayer environment is just fun. Is damnation the game that ultimately delivers it? mmm.. partly.. but not quite.. it is fun though.. and I will not take that away from the game. I believe the reason why the game is receiving such a negative feedback is because of the hype that it had and because of the expectations that we all had. But I am grateful that we (gamers) have a variety of products out there to choose from including Damnation. I payed $39 for this game on steam so that definitely means something (most hyped current generation games usually sell for 49). But to be honest with you... I believe the game is definitely worth at least $29. I would buy it again for 29 bucks. What the game does have is potential and perhaps BlueOmega releases a good sequel in the future .. who knows.. maybe bigger maps.. more vehicles.. (I would like to use the flying vehicles that are shown in the cutscenes).. better graphics/animations.. etc.. so that the game can focus in multiplayer.. something similar to WarHawk.. (I love that game).
Anyways... I do hope that we can get a finished, truly polished vertical shooter game with current generation graphics/animations sometime this year (Dark void looks pretty good so far.. lets wait and see).
Thanks for reading.. I hope you find this information useful.

Vertical gameplay is freakishly hard to design, but at least a lot of games these days have some great vertical sections or enemies. Always loved the Barnacles in the Half-Life series for that. Prince of Persia 2008 had a huge amount of verticality as well, though the combat itself was pretty horizontal.

@bildo, true, the first part was quite vertical, you were taking fire from above (and sometimes below) as well as from both sides. very hectic, lots of fun.

I miss Descent 2, I wish for a Descent IV. or just a Descent 2 remake (with new nice shiny graphics)
