@Aubrey

Ah cool, you know how it is, internet stupidity and all it's sometimes hard to know when someone is joking.

Chrispy, the portal mechanics of prey had been talked about in interviews long before the Human Head developed version picked up, and finished, the 3DR license.

I don't know whether Narbacular Drop DID take inspiration from those early hints. Could easily have come up with it completely separately. But saying that Prey and portal mechanics only existed during the final Prey development is stretching it a bit.

I loved ET Quake Wars, Splash Damage are excellent developers. It would be great if their next title was more accessible. I like hardcore games but sometimes I wouldn't mind a game that I don't have to master just to enjoy it. Playing RPG's is a bit like that so if they can get the mix right this could be good.

Quake Wars sucked, mostly because of those damn DOOM3-wrapped-in-plastic shaders.

But Splash Damage forever and ever gets forgiven for Quake Wars-- as well as any other piece of crap they might turn out in the future, because RTCW: Enemy Territory is almost surely the best action team shooter of all time.

Bethesda and Splash Damage? Could be interesting.

And, you know, if it was 5 years ago, in the age of games that weren't complete and total soulless cash-grabs, I'd be hyped beyond belief.

But Brink looks to be yet another 'future space marine' 'epic cinematic experience' shooter type deal.

Yawn.

"To the same extent that Portal was a rip off of Prey."

1. As commercial titles, both games were developed concurrently.
2. The first public announcement of Prey's core gameplay mechanics came in May 2005 in a PC Gamer exclusive and the game was released in July 2006. Meanwhile, work on Narbacular Drop (the student project predecessor to Portal by the same developers and showcasing the same core gameplay mechanics) began in Autumn 2004 and it was released in Spring 2005.

You may now stand corrected.

@Jahkaivah: don't worry. I was just pointing out the similarity using ironic comic book guy style dismissiveness. It was a good idea in a platform game, and it'd be a good idea in an FPS game.

"Splash Damage’s last game (Enemy Territory: Quake Wars) was a very good and innovative game that did not get the recognition it deserved. The objective-driven maps were great, but its most important new feature were the dynamically- or player-generated missions that you received during the multi-player matches, which always gave you mini-goals to achieve."

It also decided to 'introduce' us to constant and never-stopping respawn deaths. The first thing I told my friend, when pressed into trying COD4, was how similar the constant airstrike/chopper/grenade deaths felt to Quake Wars. Which really sucked, because a lot of the game I actually liked.

The always dying in my own spawn, or having to get a (whatever that truck was called) into a location - and only having one route - was not part of the fun.

Fun DID involve crashing that flying drone thing into enemy players over and over, basically frustrating them out of the server because, well, there wasn't much you could do about that.

@James G

Thow in randomly generated ecounters and you got a cool indie game.

@Aubrey

To the same extent that Portal was a rip off of Prey. Mario wasn't 1st person, meaning you could see the Boos when your character couldn't killing most of the fun. Think of it more as a "Here's how you were supposed to do it dummies."

Splash Damage is a pretty good game company. The only problem is I don't think they do game engines, so does that mean the engine portion of the game comes from Bethesda? If so welcome to crash city. They managed to break pretty much every DLC for Fallout3 plus their games are just crash happy.

I am interested in seeing Splash use their awesome tech for a new game. Well, atleast this time, theyre not going up against BF2.

Im also highly skeptical that ANYONE has that blue irises. :P
